Live 5-10. Table is unusually strong for a 5-10 game. The game is new but I have played with a number of the players. I have a tight image.

Villain is an unknown. 30-45 year old white male who bought in for less than max. Dressed unassumingly, no visible tats/headphones/sunglasses etc. No other information. Effective stacks around 2k except villain in hand has 1500.

I open A8dd 4 off the button. High limit reg on my left calls and button calls.

Flop Td9d5x. I lead 65, fold, button makes it 165. I flat

Turn 9x no bd flush draw.
check check

River Jx. I check he bets 250 I shove.

Don't like it. He likely sizes Jx smaller OTR, and we pretty much rep nothing since T9, TT, 99, and 55 would have 3bet the flop and we probably would have gone for a c/r with those hands anyway rather than lead to begin with. Plus older players do coyly check a boat on the turn sometimes so its not like his river range is at all capped.

Yeah I don't particularly like it. Would you play any value hands like this besides JJ?

I'm guessing V boated up on the turn.

The only value in shoving is to get V to fold the Jd/QJ/78 V is value betting with after semi-bluffing the flop. Even if he has a J, not too sure a rec player is value betting here as you could easily have an overpair you were planning on check-calling.

Wow people are putting a higher probability of his having a boat than I thought. I think it's possible but I think the odds are rather small unless he has JJ.

Also I have more than just the JJJ fh in my range here. Although I will often 3b strong hands on this flop I do like to b/c with weakish hands to this sizing so I wilil balance with some 2pair+ hands. I can also have J9s with the bd fd.

I feel comfortable my c/r bluff is balanced. My question is rather - is he folding often enough for this to be correct. My read was that this type of player will probably value bet a little wider than he should here. My image is tight to players who know me but unknowns' default image of me is probably a little loose/cally.

What do you think his b/f range is in this spot? I think it's narrow based on his perception of you. Since the "standard" is to 3b with T9, TT, 99, and 55 OTF, he's going to discount the probability that you have those hands when you just flat.

Whether you consider yourself balanced is not that important - it's whether opponent thinks you're balanced enough to give you credit for a big hand when you flat the flop and check the river.
