Boat on River vs Flush on River - What to do on river (and rest of hand) Boat on River vs Flush on River - What to do on river (and rest of hand)

Hello All, First post here after reading for about 8+ months. Looking for some feedback into how I played this hand.

Background about the game, Live (Rake Free) 1/2 NL with ability to buy in up to 75% of Big stack. Very loose game where average stack size is typically around 700, with a few stacks in the 1,400+ range.

Playing 6 Handed, Hero UTG+1 ($800), Villian UTG+2 ($500). Villian is pretty snug, not one of the splashier players at the table. Buys in for $200 - $300 typically.

Preflop Action: Hero (9h9d) makes it $15, Villian, Button, SB all Call. Pot $62
Flop: 9s8s4d
Flop Action: SB checks, Hero bets $35, Villian Calls, Button & SB fold. Pot $132
Turn: 9s8s4d 2c
Turn Action: Hero bets $90, Villian Calls $90. Pot $312
River: 9s8s4d 2c 4s
River Action: Hero Checks, Villian Checks behind
Showdown: Hero 9's full, Villian shows j7ss for a losing flush.

My thought process, when he calls turn bet I put him squarely on flush draw. When the flush comes on river (pairing the board), I check expecting him to bet his flush with the intention of shoving over any bet. Is this the right line? Should I have value bet, should I have shoved?

Appreciate all thoughts and analysis

Thanks

Beautiful river card for us.... You have to bet, and bet big, shove this river.... He's not folding a flush he just called two Streets to make.... By checking you give villan the option to think he can't get called by worse on this paired board... So he checks behind,
You might have been better checking a blank, then villan has to bluff at it if he wants to win the pot, and he can't call any bet we make...

I like the rest of the hand btw..... Maybe 15 is on the large size pre,but I don't mind that especially with 9s..... Could we have bet the flop slightly larger maybe.... But pre, flop and turn are all good in my view, shove the river and collect

Welcome to the forums! Interesting first hand.

I think you should bet the flop bigger for two reasons. First, you're multiway on a wet flop against splashy players. There are a ton of draws and made hands that can call you. Second, you're 250BBs deep and you have the nuts. You need to start betting big now to try and get stacks in on the river. I'd bet $60, or maybe even make an overbet if some of the callers were particularly splashy. There really are a ton of draws available on this board that can call you.

Same thing on the turn: bet bigger. If you go even a little bigger on both the flop and turn, then a river shove is only about 75% pot. As you've set it up, a shove is an overbet.

As played, I like a bet of around $200 on the river. You can't be sure that a rivered flush will bet for you; nor can you be sure that a flush will call your check/raise even if you get a bet. But it will be hard for a rivered flush to fold to a two-thirds pot bet here.

Also, I think you need to reevaluate your assessment that villain is "pretty snug" when he shows up with J7 after a $15 preflop open from UTG+1.

This.

I like a check here when the river bricks out. When that happens, the only way you can get more money is to let him bluff.

I'll revise my initial assesment from "pretty snug" to "Loose Caller preflop, tight post flop"

Appreciate the feedback. The rest of the table was very surprised when Villain showed his checked flush.

I think I like the $200 bet over the All-in against this opponent. Both options are superior to my line. I tend to go for the check raise to often on my nutted river hands when just simply betting is the better option.
