Did I play this hand wrong? I thought I was good till the river, turns out we were split. When he made the river bet I thought I was beaten but the money was 6 to 1.

I could maybe see turn, I was 2 to 1 with top pair and second kicker with just over 2 to 1 on the money to call. That's a little tough with only 1 face card on the board but maybe it's an adjustment I need to make but pre-flop I was the initial 2-bet and everyone but the opponent got out of my way so I don't really understand how I played a top 15% hand wrong pre-flop.

Your hand is kind of speculative, so I think the only justification for opening that UTG would be if there was a fish in the blinds (I'm happy to be proven wrong). You are gonna be OOP a lot of the time, but if a fish is in the blinds and they call.. thats quite a sweet spot where you will make money.

When he raises the flop I'm already cautious. A one pair hand isn't all that great to bloat a pot with and play for stacks so I'd want to pot control. I mean it's just my opinion, I don't play NL25 but even if I was I'd take the same approach.

Ok, so I'm hearing my range is too wide UTG. I can take that and mull it over. I've been playing for years but only recently have been taking it seriously. I was usually a chaotic LAG and just enjoyed the fun of it. I did alright but lost in the long run. I have a strong math and statistical background professionally, so I have been studying a lot and crunching numbers to get a good balance and break bad habits. Right now, I'm averaging 15% of hands played, with a 15% variance between my early and late positions. It equates to playing 30 possible hands in an early position and 40 in a late position. I have J9s ranked at 26, so it's definitely on the lower end of my early position range. May need to adjust my variance between early and late positions.

Maybe yeah, I'd say that would be a bit more optimal (as I said though, it's just my opinion. I'm learning too and by no means an expert lol). I've read from some different sources that playing around 4 times as many hands on the BU/CO as you do UTG is a good rule of thumb. If you were a bad lag before then it's gonna take some discipline. When you see your results improve it will be worth it though. 6 to 1 on the money and I know I'm beat
