I know this isn't the most sophisticated poker problem, but it's a heckuva yarn. 5/5 NL. Hero has $700 which is effective stack.

MP opens to $20, Button call, SB call. Hero calls with AJ. ($75)

The flop comes TQK, which the poker books say is a reasonably good flop for my hand (a 20,000:1 shot -- I looked it up later).

SB checks. Hero checks (anticipating C-bet). checked around. ($75)

The turn a K, which could be a great card for me. SB checks. Hero bets $40. MP and SB call. ($200)

River is J. SB checks. Hero bets $95. MP calls. SB folds.

MP says "are we chopping?" as he flips over A9. No chops today.

I'd say you did reasonably well. The problem with flopping a monster is that it's hard for anyone else to have much.

I hope you got a bonus of some kind.

I would lead the flop but otherwise it looks fine.

Pre - I like a 3! given the MP open and 2 callers.

Flop - ok.

Turn - maybe smaller sizing, $25-30.

River - a somewhat inelastic spot, so I'd go $250.

Strongly disagree on the river. We have the absolute nuts, but any ace makes a straight, plus there is 3 to a flush, plus the board is paired. I want to bet an amount that will make an ace (or maybe even a 9) look us up while a full house would raise. If we go too big we run the risk of a flush or boat not raising (and maybe even get an ace to fold).

i've had two royal flushes in my life (ironically I've never had a non-royal straight flush). I made diddly **** from either of them.

You did about as well as you could is my take.
