~1200$ effective

V is a TAG winning player. He is capable of calling with Ah on the river if it seems bluffy to him, etc.

Hero(CO) 98 raises to 20$, BU 3bet to 70$, hero calls

Flop($150) T 7 2

Hero x, V bets $80, Hero calls

Turn($310) 5

x x

River($310) 4

Hero - ???

If I decide to bluff on the river, what bet sizing is better to choose? Assuming we're playing against a tricky opponent who can call with Ah if we bet small because of odds, and call a big bet if he doesn't see any sense in that sizing here.

If the guy is tag we dont really want to be calling 3bets oop w 98s unless we have good reason like we have some read and plan on how we can take the pot away from him, ie, he overfolds to check raises.

This hand is perfect for a flop check raise to do that. I would definitely go for flop XR to 250 and blast turn if called.

As played we just need him to fold stuff like AJ, KQ, and QJ, etc, so id go for a 2/3 value looking bet like 200.

Wouldn't hate a flop check raise.

AP, don't think I'm bluffing river just because he checks back turn, unless we have a loose image and V has seen us show up in spots like this with 86 or T7.

Feels like an over-bluffed spot where V is going to call down a lot.

Yeh I do like a flop x/r given stack sizes and texture - on the river I think it's a mandatory bet - I think a lot of his overpairs bet the turn so would think he's fairly weak on the river here. He'd have to put you on exactly 89 to call here as nothing else makes sense

Don’t know what the Solver says, but in these spots I believe we bet small with both bluffs and value. Bet what you’d bet with JTs or 87s—30% pot.

Preflop, 98s is one of the worst SCs to call a 3bet with, especially oop.
So, folding pre to the 3bet is probably the safest way to play it.

As played pre, flop is an almost mandatory C/R.
In this case, if V called the C/R, you could shove on this specific turn.

As played, river doesn't look like a great spot to bluff, especially against a good V: you are just repping too thin.
It kind of sucks because we cannot win this pot without bluffing, but I would probably just give up nonetheless.
The moment to start a bluff was otf, imo.

dont give action to winning players, especially live TAG players who dont even deserve it.

This is also key. It's not so much just being OOP but the ranges that BTN is going to be 3betting with here are going to result in lots of pair domination vs K9 and stuff.

That's so common when you get to the river with busted draw-type hands and your opponent is capable of having a strong range, even his missed hands are strong, like A high or KQ. And sometimes it's really tough to bluff him off that. I feel silly in those situations on the river, and the mistake probably happened earlier, like you guys mentioned preflop or OTF.

If I want my opponent to fold AK, AQ, or KQ hands, the best street to get these holdings off is the flop.
