Ok, so I go to a home game which I don't know much about. Some people I know are there and they play fairly badly, as all live players do. Don't know much about the other players.

I sit down and my first hand in UTG (10 handed) is JJ. I raise to 40$.
2 people call. The BB is some fat guy who runs the game and I've been told is also a bad player. He raises to 400$. I have 1960$ in front of me.
I ???

Depends on how fat and how bad he is.

You don't know your opponent. Without a read, you play to protect your stack and fold.

You may regret it later when you see him making huge reraises with weak hands. But, you don't have that information yet.

In my experience, live games are cally bad, not maniac bad. Especially fat old guys. I would default to my generic fat guy read and fold. (I'm not joking)

Being told somebody is a bad player isn't that useful unless you know what that means -- there are a lot of ways for somebody to be bad. Besides, it's probably not good to make a big, close decision based on what somebody else tells you about how a 3rd party plays.

I think this is an amazingly easy fold. For it not to be a fold you need some kind of read here which you just don't have.

I would shove. Most likely he has a smaller pocket pair and is trying to buy the pot. I doubt he would make it 400 to go in a 120 dollar pot with Qs-As.

If you are crushed it will be good advertising that you won't be pushed around and will help you in the future.

Or you might relish the opportunity to double up. Give yourself a chance to get some reads and give this guy a chance to choke himself later in the night.

If he's as deep as you are, I just fold and wait for a better spot. If he's really bad, there will be better spots for you to stack him, you don't have to flip for 200BB.

He's bad, fat, and old. He has aces and just wants to win the pot right there because "he never wins with aces"

Seriously I don't think its worth getting involved for such a massive raise that early in the game. Wait until you get a read before playing for stacks.
