Live 2/5, 9 handed. villain has around 2k - very splashy and he is absolutely hammered, have played with once before and he played like a maniac. This session has overbet/jammed with air and the nuts multiple times, have seen him 3bet hands like QKs, 77 and overbet jam flops.

Hero - $800
BB - $2000

I raise $20 with 86 in CO.
BB 3bets to $65. I call.

Flop: 9 5 6

BB bets $65 into $130. I call.

Turn: 4. BB bets $345 into $260

What are we doing in this spot? I can see merit in all three options.

Call pre is very bad. Sure this guy is 3-betting light, but you're still never, ever ahead of his 3-betting range. In fact, for this hand you'd actually prefer that he be 3-betting a face up range of KK+, because then you actually have some implied odds.

If you saw him do this type of over bet only with the nuts or air multiple times but not with medium strength hands like an over pair then I'm leaning towards a call because I don't think he is 3beting with 7 8 , he might have a flush draw and 2 overs, if you call turn you have to call river even if you miss your 13 outs.

Fold pre, $190 flop, as played if he's really that wide all in

This is more of an OMC treatise not one to be applied to a drunk maniac. You're also confusing implieds with cappedness.

fold pre.

if you're going to open this hand with this villain yet to act, reduce your raise size. I'd recommend tightening your range though, and folding this pre (against a maniac SPR shrinks rapidly and speculative hands play very poorly. if you're going to play this hand, you need to jam draws when you find them).

turn is a great bluff-catching hand (you have mountains of equity against his better hands). a call is probably +EV against me when I'm drunk and spewing in this spot.

Grunch:

With a maniac in the BB, I'd fold pre the first time. Definitely fold to the 3b. He's going to barrel pretty frequently, and if we continue, we're going to end up bluffcatching with 8th pair in big pots a lot (and folding a lot). I'd much rather be in this spot with hands that'll make TPGK often.

As played, if we shove, Villain's pretty unlikely to fold better given the odds he'll be getting, and if we flat he's going to jam the river pretty much always. The question is whether we'd call unimproved or not. (Which is sort of why I hate playing this hand against a maniac.) I lean toward call turn & shovel chips in on all rivers.
