Literally the very next deal I flopped another set and doubled him up when he turned top set. At this point he felt generous enough to say he did have deuces. I believe it. I really wish I had flatted turn. I'm really curious how often a ship gets called instead of the smaller raise.
Wow... and this is why the turn raise is the worst play possible. You were in the best possible situation with a set over set flop and still couldn't get it all in. I think his play was really bad, as you could easily have KQ as well, but still the fact that he got away is a disaster.

Tilted villains will often call down when they think you are full of sh*t and bluffing... or they will continue to bluff themselves. but raising a large bet is perceived differently.

Interestingly last night I plugged this hand into snowie, giving villain exactly 22. It made a smallish raise to 500 or so 56%, flatted 44%. Shipping was lowest EV play.

But yes it feels disastrous. I talked to villain about the hand as we were seated next to each other a couple nights ago. He said he gave me credit as a solid player, and the Q helped him get away. After sitting next to him for several hours and listening to him give unsolicited opinions, he's not as solid as I initially imagined. Still folded set though, sigh.

Pre-flop: Good.

Flop: I like the down-bet. I will be betting this texture 100% of the time for that sizing. Might even go $25 to maximize profit on villains tendency to fold when they miss. NEVER 3-BET this flop. You will only fold out the spaz-bluff (you did just show your bluff for that reason right? Which means you can no longer c-bet bluff these spots.) And if he has half a brain he will lock down the hands you beat (K9, 22, KQ) that might be raising for value.

Turn: When he fires a large size turn bet you should never raise here for the same reason you don't 3-bet the flop. Your concern about the gutshot draw is unfounded, as villain priced himself out and you can stack off knowing that his play was unprofitable even if it does get there. Don't focus on this one hand, focus on your range of outcomes here. Folding out hands you beat with a jam here is a disaster.

Think of it this way. If it was checked to you, would you really expect to get in more than a PSB on the turn??? Unlikely to say the least. If he has a set or 2p, you can count that he will bet river, and you are in position if he doesn't.

Now for the results...
I made it clear I was never concerned about possibly losing to a straight at any point in the hand. Or even on the river. Only concern ever was how to get all the chips in by the river.
