Effective stack size is $620.

The hijack limps.

I have AT on the button and I raise to $20. BB and hijack both call.

Flop (3 players, $62): T86

Both check to me. I bet $35. BB raises to $75. Hijack folds. I re-raise to $200. BB asks how much I have left (I cover). He thinks for about 15 seconds and then raises all-in to $600 ($400 to call).

Setting is Hollywood Casino in West Virginia.

Villain is young and asian. I'd been sitting with him for about two hours. I remember thinking that he was really aggressive. I don't think I ever saw him get to a showdown.

The fold button really does exist. Unless he check raises every single flop he plays oop, this is an easy fold on the check-raise, and snap fold on the 4-bet. Probably the worst hand he can have here is J9 offsuit, and I can't imagine someone playing with a 4-bet range on the flop that doesn't have you absolutely crushed here. Obvious that I hate the 3-bet also.

What is your reasoning behind 3 betting to $200 here? On a texture like this you are crushed by a fair part of his range (sets, T8, 97, 86), and most other stuff he could be getting it in with has a ton of equity (AQs-A7s/J9/KQs/KJs) so I don't like playing for stacks with one pair on a board like this. Your 3 bet has put you in a terrible position as now you are getting 2-1 on his shove.

An important lesson in this case: if you are going to 3 bet in a spot like this, know beforehand whether you are doing it as a bluff or for value and how you will respond to a 4 bet before you make the 3 bet. Without a plan you have put yourself in a terrible situation where quite frankly both of your options suck.

I thought villain was really aggressive, so I thought there was a good chance he would check-raise any drawing hand, and there are a lot. Flush draws, J9, T9, 98, 87, 76, 75. I thought he might even check-raise some air, since he probably knows that my range is usually pretty weak here. I felt like his small bet size weighted his range even more towards draws and air.

I thought his range was weak enough that I didn't want to fold, but I also didn't really want to call and let him draw for free. Also, almost any card that comes on the turn is going to be some kind of scare card that he could fire another barrel with.

I thought that if I 3-bet small, he would fold his air, call with his draws, and shove his monsters. So I 3-bet with the intention of folding to a shove, folding to a turn bet, and betting myself if it was checked to me on the turn.

I guess this play is highly dependent on my tentative read that this guy was really aggressive. I hadn't really been at the table very long. And it's also highly dependent on him not 4-betting his draws. I guess I was thinking "he won't shove his draws, it already looks like I'm committed and he doesn't have the odds," but maybe I'm wrong there. Especially given that I was in fact planning on folding to a shove. Um.

Snap fold to the check raise. I'd literally have a portable blow torch lit and ready to go while he was cutting out his raise. Also, a competent player is shoving FD's and combo draws all day here. Calling OOP here with a draw basically means you get to see 1 card instead of 2.
