We were bluffing with the x/r on the flop, against a V with a wide/weak 3B'ing range pre. We were hoping to fold out all his Jx and Tx with better kickers, so that if we made a pair we wouldn't be dominated.
When we turn top pair, weak kicker, what we have is a decent bluff catcher. Turning a good bluff catcher into a bluff by continuing to bet is generally a mistake. What we should do is check, to feign weakness, and let him bluff at it.
When we x/r'd flop, we were repping sets or big over-pairs. We probably wouldn't check turn with those hands, but if we did, I'd expect V to check back at least some of the time. Those sets boated up or became quads on the river.
We wouldn't check again with those hands, so when we check again, he'll likely bet here a lot, both with worse value, and total air-ball bluffs.
