This hand occurred last night and it's really been bothering me. I'm sure I didn't play it the best, so I decided to post it.

Villian (~350): Young 20-something. Been fairly active with raising and limping into a number of hands; also straddling when he can. However, verbally, he's been quiet. Seems to be a thinking player, although how deep remains to be seen. Appears to have made a hero call with A-hi a few hands previous (hand was not shown down, but a single pair of 9s took it down with V making a PF raise, c-bet flop, call turn/river line on a J2479cc board).

Hero (~300): Been at the table for 2 orbits and has only played his post hand and unraised bb, both passively. Looks very young and has been mostly silent. If villian recognizes me (I play in this room fairly often), he knows I play a weak-tight style, but am a decent winner.

One limper in EP. Hero raises to 11 in CO with A5. Villian is the only caller OTB.

Flop (~$25): 1052

Hero bets 16. Villian calls.

Turn (~57): 3

Hero checks. Villian bets 35. Hero calls.

River (~127): 8

Hero checks. Villian bets 55. Hero?

I think, until the turn, my play is pretty standard. In hindsight, I probably should have bet the turn. However, this is a spot I've been having trouble with lately. In a spot where I flop a pair +FD, I tend to bet flop and unimproved turns, but when the river bricks, I find myself in the position of bluffing river or checking and, more often than not, facing a bet, made sizable because of my bet on the turn.

My thought process on checking the turn was attempting to keep the pot reletively small. My hand does appear to be two overs, and villian could be betting at my check. However, the river is where I have the most trouble. I don't beat much, but because of my passive line, I feel that villian could be betting extremely wide.

How badly did I play the hand, and how can I improve at situations like this in the future?

Actually I think checking the turn is ok. It's a bad barrelling card, you have 17 outs to beat a bare ten, and it would suck to bet and have V raise too big for you to call. Check raise turn shove river is an interesting line, I'm not gonna do the math here but given our equity it doesn't take a lot of folds on villain's part to make it +ev
