This is an interesting hand I played in a 1/2 NLHE live cash game at my local casino. The table opened up in the late afternoon/early evening time. Max buy-in is $500. The table has a good mix of fish and rocks, and a couple of solid players at best.

Button is in seat 5

Seat 6 is SB
Seat 7 is BB
Seat 8 puts out a live straddle for $5 (Villain, $300 stack)
Seat 9 calls $5
Seat 1 calls $5 with K8 (Hero, $250 stack)
Seat 2 calls $5
Seat 3 calls $5
Seat 4 calls $5
Seat 5 calls $5
SB calls $5
BB calls $5
Straddle checks

Flop
583

SB checks
BB checks
Villian bets $12
Seat 9 begins to muck then sigh calls
Hero raises to $40
Folds around to Villain, makes it $112
Seat 9 folds
Hero?

How would you play this hand and why?

Villain is late 20s, maybe early 30s male with sunglasses and hoodie. He has been very active and we have not seen him go to showdown. It seems he has a decent understanding of position, stealing, value betting, etc. I would consider him one of the solid players at the table, but a little on the loose/aggressive/spewy side.

I will post the rest of the hand after I see some responses!

I raised on the flop with the intention of taking down the pot right there or isolating the villain, where I would have position on him for the remainder of the hand. If I face any more heat from the players acting after me, then I know I'm probably beat and could just give up my $40.

I probably have some showdown value but I religiously play no showdown poker unless I have a strong hand and want others to pay me off. Maybe this influenced my decision making this hand?

What is your reason for not raising the flop?

because if u get 3bet u have no idea were your at, and its hard to get called by worse, family pot to flop its hard for k8 to be far ahead of 9 hands, raising to see where your at is bad

Because if villain is the type that 'has a decent understanding of position, stealing, value betting, etc' he would rarely lead n-way without good equity and if he is the type that is 'little on the loose/aggressive/spewy side' he would often 3bet that equity here setting himself up for a shove on OTT, semibluff or value depending on his hand.

+1 to raise or fold pre. Don't raise the flop for reasons stated.

Idk what 'no showdown poker' means but making decisions based on your desire not to go to showdown seems like the wrong way to make decisions to me.

OK so here is how the hand played out starting back at the flop

Spoiler:

FLOP
583

Villain bets $12
#9 calls $12
Hero raises to $40
Folds to Villain, raises to $112
#9 folds
Hero goes all in for $245 total
Villain calls

TURN
4

RIVER
7

Hero shows K8

Villain shows 69

I puked a little and kept calm even though I wanted to pull a Phil Hellmuth and call him an idiot, etc etc

After tanking for a solid 2 to 3 minutes, I decided to jam this spot based on reads/tells and based on how I thought he would play a super strong flopped hand. I was correct but just got unlucky.
