I was playing a $1-$2 no limit game recently when a situation came up. The table was 7 handed and there was a $5 straddle from the hijack (a guy who defends his straddle unless there is significant action in front of him). In this case the villain has $127 and had to re-buy when the hero cracked his aces two orbits before. Hero starts the hand with $280. Action folds to the SB who makes it $10. Hero raises to $22 with 9c9s in the BB. Action folds around to villain who calls. Flop comes out 10 4 3 rainbow. Villain checks and hero bets $40 into $49 and villain tank calls. Turn comes another 10 still rainbow and villain looks nervous and checks. Hero shoves and villain tank calls again and shows pocket jacks. My question is what line if any could I have taken to get him to fold? I realize that my flop bet was too much in relation to how much he had left. Other than maybe making the bet smaller on the flop so he didn't have half his stack in on the flop what could I do? Thank you for taking the time to read this and this is my first post so any suggestions are encouraged.

I don't 3bet the short stacker pre with 99 and I don't shove the turn.

Villain has already put $62 in the pot and has $65 back on the turn. Chances are they are not folding. I check back the turn for some pot control.

I can't see villain ever folding JJ given their stack.

Should I not attempt to isolate him pre-flop? He is the only person that I have position on, there are 3 players to act after me who will probably call if I just call, and there are a lot of flops that aren't so good for my hand in that situation.

SB makes it 10 like a weak player looking for action. This is not a loose player trying to steal IP. Flat here all dayday and try to hit a set with the other players in the hand. Lower SPRS lessen positional advantage. You actually overrepped your hand which is why he tanked. He's never folding unless there is an A or K on the flop.

Personally I would just call preflop, but if you do decide to isolate the SB because you think his raising range is wide, you need to make it more. $30-35 seems good.

I'm not sure why you bet the turn. There's no real draws out there that you need to protect yourself from. Nothing better is folding and the only value you might get is from 88-77, which is a pretty narrow range. Check back the turn see what happens on the river.
