I guess everyone has different experiences, but at my reg filled table it is totally opposite.
Lol, last time out I raised 88 against a poor face up limper. Flop AQ9, I check back, Qr turn, I check back again (my flop/turn play is debatable). Anyways, A river for a AAQQ9 board and he lol's and shakes his head, turns his cards to his neighbour and laughs "ha, I can't even win". I bet, and he folds his chopping underpair face up.
The week before that, the old reg to my left limps AA and checks thru a Axx flop. I pick up 2nd pair on the turn and bet it, and he lol's and says something like "lol, I have top set so I guess I have to call" (FWIW, I never check down a hand with anyone, I'm ruthless like that). I check river and he shows the AA.
