So I know I misplayed this hand, and that's why I'm posting it. Please let me know what you would've done and how you would've played it differently...

V ($160ish): Late 20's; new to table
Hero ($175ish)

V raises to 7 in EP. I call w/ J9o in MP. Several others call. 5 handed.
Flop is 972r. V makes c-bet of 15. I raise to 37. Folds around to V who calls.
Turn is T. We both chk.
River is 2 (no flushes on board). V bets 38.

Thoughts?

An absolute massacre of a hand.

Fold pre. Awful call. Especially readless. Awful.

Flat the flop maybe, folding is not bad given villain bet into so many people.
Why are we raising? What does this achieve??

Fold river. What could we possibly beat? He probably has TT-QQ a lot.

Fold pre flop, this is a pretty garbage hand that will just get you into trouble on flops just like this one.
Super easy hand after that...

But on to the hand as played:

Don't raise TP weak kicker with 4-5 other people in the hand.
You are likely losing on the flop, still losing on the turn, and stayed behind on the river.

There are lots of better TP type hands in his range here, A9, K9, Q9, T9 got there on the turn. Also, TT/JJ/QQ could play this way, esp if they are a little bit scared on the flop. All in all it just seems like a really bad play.
Turn is fine to check behind, and river is fine as long as you folded, because you are never winning.

Definitely did not play my best game today. Need to sleep it off, clear my head, and start fresh tomorrow.

Fold pre 100% of the time.

I probably fold the flop with so many opponents left to act. Maybe I call due to his small sizing but raising? What are you trying to accomplish with a raise? Do you honestly think Villain will fold a better hand than ours? Or call with worse? At least you checked behind OTT.

River is a fold as played.

Why did you call pre-flop?

Before you choose to play a hand (or take any action at any point in the game in poker), try to have a reason for your action.

When you called the J9o PF, I'm guessing your thought process was something like,
"Villain raised from early position. He probably has a good hand. I have an okay hand. Maybe I'll hit a straight or something. I'll call and see what happens."

Can you try to think of some better reasons for calling a PF raise?

Fold pre.

AP, I'd flat otf. What worse hands are you trying to get value from? It seems like you're trying to have V fold and in essence turning top pair into a bluff. Keep the unpaired broadway cards in his range and mid pp's.

After that I don't know you should never be in this spot you're in after the flop.

Yeah evaluate this leak and all your pre flop leaks first before moving to post flop. It's easier to correct your preflop game which can have an outstanding effect on your winrate. Post flop with all the action and runners in the hand we're folding because a Q,K,A kills our hand. A J or 9 is the only good turn card and we're not gonna get much value from worse when we hit a 9 because the multi-way action will scare the EP raiser on a turn card like that.

I would suggest reading some pre-flop hand selection articles and work on that for a bit.
