Is there any point to open raise sizing balance if people aren't folding? Is there any point to open raise sizing balance if people aren't folding?

Hello everyone,

I was just playing at the casino and kind of got a bit frustrated. I busted my money on a hand where I opened 4x in the cutoff with pocket J.

The SB and BB call, BB being a loose bad player. The flop is monotone and I hold J: an overpair and FD.

I make a cbet 2/3 pot, SB jams, BB folds and I call. I have about 40 behind effective, so I feel like I am pot committed.

He turns over 65s for two pair.

My opening size at these tables has been 5x in EP and 4x in LP. In a previous hand I opened to 5x and the fishy guy calls and I miss the flop and he bets and I fold.

I am thinking is there any point to lower my open size in LP if I am going to get called so wide. And how do you combat people who seem to call you so wide and then when you miss the flop you are kind of dead OOP.

What I am gathering is to maybe open up to 6x EP and 5x LP when I am playing 100bb game.

Thanks for the input guys,
R

When too many people call preflop raises then in the future I raise bigger preflop. In the I/3 game I played today I raised preflop to $25 three times. Once I received no callers and twice I received two callers. I did this because betting $15 received many callers. I would rather have fewer callers who are making bigger mistakes.

If players are calling preflop raises with bad cards then I think you should make them pay as much as they will pay. Also flop play becomes easier with the bigger pot because your continuation bet will be bigger. If someone calls your continuation bet then you probably can have simpler time to figure out their hand.

So if you were to sit down at a new table with new faces what would your standard open raise size be?

There are a bunch of threads about this, including one in the Best of LLSNL links thread.
Cliffs: How much to raise depends on what you want to happen and table conditions.

I am usually looking to get 1-3 callers. My default sizing at 1/2NL (again, very table condition dependent) is 6Xbb +1BB per limper, +1BB if I am in EP or the blinds. At 1/3, I can often bring that down to 4X+1+1, and in 2/5 I can often make it 3X+1+1. With that much variance in my sizing naturally, I can usually sneak an extra BB in there with premiums and not have anyone notice any sizing tells.

Please continue this discussion in the "Why raise so much" thread in best of, if reading that doesn't answer all your questions.
