Strategy when they usually check to the PF raiser Strategy when they usually check to the PF raiser

Hello,

At the game I've been playing in, it's been pretty standard for the callers to check to the preflop raiser. (There is only the occasional donk bet, which usually means some weak hand they don't want to stack off with.)

What should be the general strategy for c-betting?

Thanks.

Hi,

The answer to the question is not going to be simple. People will always check to the pfr (and sometimes they love to check dark) because they know that most people will fire a cbet even if they miss the flop. So they will check and see what he does.

Regarding a general strategy for cbetting - when we raise pre, people will call you with all sorts of hands trying to hit their flop but they will miss it most of the time, so often a cbet will take it down. However, people have evolved (even fish) and they know people are cbetting almost their entire range. so they are not folding that easy anymore. That's why the strategy has to be a complete hand strategy, not just a strategy for cbetting. You are going to have to fire turns and barrel rivers too, depending on how many players are in the hand, reads on them, stacks, and board texture.

Good luck,
ibl

That sums it up nicely.

There are threads on cbetting in the micro full ring forum under the COTW category in their stickies. I suggest starting there. I know the threads are old. However, if you are asking for a general strategy, that's a good place to start.

Its actually a very interesting question when applied to live poker and most of the write ups on cbetting do not directly apply as mulitway theory is quite complex and very under-studied.

Yes, you are right. My raises are frequently seeing like 5 or 6 callers preflop. My general feelings are since they are all expecting me to bet, I gain an advantage to checking more hands. Now, my strategy has basically been, betting and praying with complete whiffs with no chance of improving, and betting strong hands and draws.

Yea. I think an intersting approach would be to try and follow solver's advice in heads up pots oop. They check hands like KK on T75cc and they also check hands (at a decent frequency) like AsKs on Kh2s7d. If they bet oop with single pair type hands it is usually very small, like 1/4 pot.

I think these same concepts could be brought over into live pokers 8 way fields, for slightly different reasons.

I experimented a bit this summer and at loose passive tables it works really well but at aggressive tables it was quite challenging.

When I am in a multi-way pot, I cbet when I have a strong draw to the nuts or at least an overpair or TPTK, assuming it is a dry board. If it is a wet board, I won't bet with TPTK too often. Pocket pairs and middle pairs I will pretty much always check.

You can always increase your bet size to reduce the number of callers as well.
