he sez although the numbers seem stabul ackshually many states are showing spikes and the whole thing is appearing to b flat cuz NY and NJ numbers have come down so much
Thanks. I hadn't checked the Hopkins map for some time. The Washington Post displays a (apparently very misleading) death chart that has been declining every day for the past weeks, creating a bell-shaped curve, and that led me to believe that we had been flattening. I guess I was wrong. It does appear that there is some decline in the number of new cases, but obviously not nearly where we want/need to be, especially considering how many states are opening already.

the USA graph is similar to my state. The # of daily new cases is remarkably stable, resulting in an almost perfect linear climb of total cases. Recovered people are not subtracted from the curve. However testing has gone up exponentially, I could get tested at a supermarket if I really wanted to. If it was really spreading like wildfire the curves would look much different.
Early on the virus spreads exponentially. That rate of growth is no longer exponential and looks rather flat. that is one good piece of news.
However, there was an expectation that we could shut down the economy and replicate what was done in Asia and that certainly did not happen. The US has 96,582 deaths. South Korea has 266 deaths. If South Korea had handled it similar to the US it would have over 15,000 deaths (and counting). However, instead South Korea only had 11,165 recorded cases. Dallas County, where I live, has just 2.6 million people but is closing in on the # of deaths for all of South Korea (51 million people).
BTW, I find the state data to be far more valuable than overall US data. New York's data, as an example, is not really representative of what is going on in other parts of the country like California or Texas.
it’s unfair to compare the US numbers with the Australian ones, on account of how much more awesome and high achieving Australians are in general. You should compare America with a country of similar talents and achievements like Poland or Belarus
If you think about it, the places that have had difficulty flattening the curve are also the places with very curvy women (Italy, Spain, Brazil, New York City). Perhaps there is a connection there...and perhaps it's worth the trade-off.

Australians are some of the most incredible people on the planet

Spoiler:
I hear there are a bunch of brits living there too.

Italians have weaker lungs and is an older nation.
Rio de J's graph has such an extreme spike that they obviously changed their counting practices last week.
