Right, medical professionals are hopeful seasonality is a factor.

A secondary goal I think is that if the virus' incubation period is 11 days or whatever, by isolating people for a slightly longer period of time, you can do a better job of finding the infected and then clamping down on them before they spread the disease. This will not be easy to do and probably will be far from 100% effective, but it will probably help somewhat.

Welcome to the casino! You may get the virus, but don’t worry we’ll close the doors when the hospitals get too busy!! Cheers!!!

One local room went 8-handed to combat the coronavirus.

How much have you lost in poker then?

But seriously I have no idea whether you’re trolling or not...

He's saying having hope the virus is seasonal doesn't mean we a free pass on taking the preventative measures we should be taking regardless. Just like how "thoughts and prayers" after mass shootings aren't a satisfactory replacement for implementing gun control measures that can make shootings happen less often and lower the death toll.

Detroit's casinos are doing seven handed to prevent the spread (srs)

I sincerely thank you for your concern. I just don’t want to turn this thread into a mini drama about my life. Things have been difficult lately and I am making the calculated risk that if I get infected I am single and won’t spread the virus to anyone while I am young enough that I will probably avoid the worse.

Still there are a few things that can go wrong, hopefully they dont materialize.

Well hopefully they and other casinos go one step further to live 6max, learn that it makes the game better, and then adopt that new structure after this health crisis ends. That and improvements to our healthcare system could be silver linings to look forward to.

And deal the cards online with an healthcare rake out of each pot.
Spoiler:

Seriously though, the poker player's dilemna is that situations that make people stay away from the card room raise the possibility of a good game. Making the game short handed cuts in the opposite direction since the fish by and large don't like isolation.

Caesars tried 6max right after Black Friday.

Yeah. I also understand that one dealer at a ten-handed vs one dealer at a 6-handed makes a big difference for casinos' cost considerations.

Unless, of course, the casinos required dealers to work as independent contractors and paid them the O. Dealers would make more (they should at 6max) and casinos would save.

daughter has the flu with a temperature and a cough. Possible she has the Rona - we went to get her tested yesterday but they refused as she hadn't been in contact with a known sufferer.

Seems weird (and will definitely contribute to keeping overall numbers lower than actual) but I'm guessing they don't have enough tests.

Here's my question though....am I better off actually getting it now to get it over with? Once we've had it, we can't get it again...right?

so if I got it (and I'm not underestimating the pain/suffering etc) then I could get back on with my everyday life?

We don't know enough about how the virus works to say that it's a good idea to try and get infected to build immunity. Herd immunity was the UK's strat but they are apparently backing away from it after getting lots of criticism.

I hope you daughter feels better.

It's not known if you get it once that you can't get it again, so I wouldn't bank on that. There have been some reported cases where it seems people have gotten reinfected.

Also it's better to get it later imo when you have a chance at getting some anti-virals and perhaps better treatment strategies should you need them.

So Australia seems to be similar to the U.S. with regards to testing. And yes that is stupid they wouldn't test her. Hope she feels better soon and that the rest of your family doesn't get sick.

Update from Seattle with a cold.

Felt good yesterday, cancelled a trip in middle of week because of a small cough. Went shopping at the local grocery store and there was an ok amount of tp first thing in the morning. My neighbors were shocked to see me with that sweet sweet tp. Supposedly places were sold out this week. I was surprised that there was actually a fair amount of beans and other preserved foods on the shelves still. More stockers than usual were running around and lots of boxes in the aisle, don't know if that's normal for noon on Saturday at this store. When I stocked shelves it def wasn't, aisles were clean by 7. Could mean they got cleaned out on Friday and had to put a lot up overnight when the trucks came in.

Today cough picked up again but it's mild and no fever. Only going to call a doctor if I pick up a fever and cough actually gets bad. My rule of thumb is if I don't have trouble sleeping and wake up coughing I'm not that sick. Drank a Gatorade and getting some Pedialyte. Gonna self-quarantine for a week. Planning on vid chatting friends for sanity.

Feels...

Hope your daughter gets better soon.

I agree that if there's no known contact with an existing carrier then it is likely that she does not have COVID19. Regardless, flu symptom treatment is essentially the same as COVID19 symptom treatment.

The US CDC has a article that suggests the "secondary attack rate", i.e. the rate at which close contact transmission occurs, is 10-20%. So it is definitely not a foregone conclusion that the rest of the family would catch it.

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/...cid=mm6909e1_w

Since this strain is "novel", meaning that there is no likely large scale population immunity, and that there will not be a vaccine available for 12-18+ months, the fact is that the strain will likely continue through to the population until the magic "herd immunity" is achieved.

I have read that the four other strains of coronaviruses that affect humans do actually result in post recovery immunity, but that it is not assured with this strain as the data is not in yet. I understand that experts believe that post recovery immunity is likely for at least some time (years?).

The majority risk factor seem to be age (65+), current smoking history, compromised immune system, and/or other existing medical issues such as emphysema. So seems like the risk of serious complications is low or very low (especially for the young).

Is it better to get it now? Maybe... You could develop immunity, and if in the unlikely event that you do develop complications, the availability of ICU space where you are is probably good for now. OTOH, maybe the ICU units are still figuring out their process and systems currently, so perhaps "waiting" 45-60 days would be better...

It is unlikely you will "be able to get back to life" until the "herd" also catches up...

Might be best to wait until summer is over in two weeks so you can still get your beach days in.

Seriously though... Hope she feels better soon. Fluids, vit.C, and pediatric acetomenephen.

Thanks for her wishes and info

Perhaps not coincidentally, we’ve had a really cold March with late Autumn/Winter weather for most of the month. Saturday was the coldest March day in Sydney in 40 years and we’ve had very wet stormy weather.

Re the testing, I understand their POV (and it’s probably correct) but the point is that if they’re not testing people then they don’t know who has it and if they don’t know who has it then it’s impossible to know if the ‘flu’ we catch is off a person who has Covid or not.

We’re also lucky that we have a big house on several levels - she’s on the lowest floors in a guest suite with big bed and en-suite plus Netflix so she’s been down there since Fri and only my wife and I are going to see her, so she’s being contained.

I’m working from home this week at least and my wife is negotiating that with her employer today as well

Some guy in a tie said Covid is like the flu in that you will gain immunity to that specific strain if you beat it. OFC the flu simply mutates like the Borg.

Reminds me of the old school poker room smoking policy @Greektown, no smoking in seats 1 and 10. I guess 2nd hand smoke has quite a limited range. Although that would explain why you could barely see across the entire room.

Dang, GWS and play lots of vgs.

I went jogging for the first time in 3 weeks and am now coughing up phlegm, just like I always do after a long time off. As a benefit my noisy neighbors are closing doors and windows all around me. It's their turn to be afraid of me

#covinience

EDIT: best to Little Wrath too.
