Unfortunately, the southern hemisphere seems to be having the same level of infection level as the northern. I expect that we're looking at 2 months of this, if it goes well.
I think the logic is different.
Primarily, the goal/ is to stop the exponential spread of the disease so that the healthcare system doesn't get overwhelmed by a large spike from those seeking help. You don't want the people seeking ICU help being larger than the number of ICUs.
A secondary goal I think is that if the virus' incubation period is 11 days or whatever, by isolating people for a slightly longer period of time, you can do a better job of finding the infected and then clamping down on them before they spread the disease. This will not be easy to do and probably will be far from 100% effective, but it will probably help somewhat.
