I mean... if we're really going to talk about Bmore...

Young said hospital beds are needed to treat positive COVID-19 patients and not for senseless violence. Seven people were shot Tuesday night in the Madison Park neighborhood, as Baltimore reported its fifth positive coronavirus case Wednesday.

“I want to reiterate how completely unacceptable the level of violence is that we have seen recently,” Young said.

Just remember the good old days, you know 3 months ago, when the level of violence in Bmore was ... only a little unacceptable?

after a week of getting really down about this and the potential impacts on the world,my family and business, I've decided to watch way less of the news, not read any more articles and certainly not be a sharer/spreader of bad news/links/articles etc. This isn't to say that I'm in denial at all...far from it tbh...it's more that outside of my own personal steps to help limit the spread, I can't do much about it and I want to manage the mental and physical health of my family and me.

I'm not saying you guys also need to do this...i understand that some people want all the info and get some comfort out of sharing bad news/concerns etc...and also that people are still getting really angry with all the ignorant people who are being so reckless still. I'm just saying that I'm not doing it and am ignoring other people.

I'm interested in what plans people are making for the inevitable lock down/social isolation and any constructive ideas for self improvement, investing in the future, using their time well over the next period of time?

eg I've bought a Concept 2 and set up a semi permanent home gym in my basement to give me a better environment to keep training...it's one thing to say you're gonna stay fit, but you need to make it as enjoyable and easy to do this as you can to make it happen

I'm gonna keep to regular sleep and wake hours to keep structure in my life

have also bought a few extra Nintendo switch games for my kids and have just done a book swap with friends in the local area so I've got about unread novels downstairs to read.

I also spent 2018 qualifying for a different skillset that I can do as a side hustle down the track but have been too busy with my business to spend time on how to create an infrastructure and processes etc to start marketing myself in that area. I'm gonna have the time to do this and I'm actually quite pumped about it

anyone else doing anything/got stuff planned?

Also, just to note that I lost a mid-30s friend to the flu. It does happen.

I mean, this is obviously more serious than I thought it was likely to become, but we still need to keep things in perspective. The numbers so far (and I'm not saying they'll stay this way) are still just a statistical drop in the bucket.

I honestly fear that we'll lose as many people to suicide, overdose, etc. brought on by the economic ramifications of the response as the response will save. Obviously, that is not quantifiable, and we can't morally justify just ignoring it and letting the chips fall where they may, but we need to make sure we don't worry so much about this one threat that we lose sight of others.

I have a number that I am relatively certain we will stay below for total deaths (much lower than most projections) from the rona in the U.S., which I kind of want to prop bet but feel like that is too dark even for me.

At the time he was a healthy 34 yr old who went to Disney World.

Just pointing out that this isn't some decrepit 80yr old in a nursing home that was about to die like so many want to try and brush this disease off as. There's real risk to a much broader age group.

There are plenty more in their 30s and 40s that are hospitalized and even if they live they only lived because they got treatment. If you think I'm spreading hysteria, yeah keep your head in the sand man.

Also not gonna be able to keep using that Swine flu analogy. We're pretty much there already in a fraction of the time.

Sure it’s worse than the flu but how bad does a threat have to be to justify extreme measures like mass quarantines and forced closure of businesses? I don’t think covid-19 justifies these measures.

Hey FW. Hope you and your family are doing well.

I think you're right on with your sentiments, and I'm going to make a more conscious effort to peel myself away from the internet and make an effort at personal development.

1. I had been trying to study Mandarin this past year, so I'll go back to making some flash cards for that and studying both the textbook and a couple apps.

2. I want to read all the way through a number of books. I've had a bad habit of getting 20% done, getting bored, and starting a different book simply because the new title seemed more interesting. Got to be better at commitment.

3. I don't have any home gym equipment, but I think I can go to a track and run when no one else is there without causing any trouble. I've definitely gained a bit of weight over the last week and a half and I don't want to turn into the blob.

4. I could also re-attempt to learn the guitar. I had made an effort back in 2016 but then put it aside. I remember that being able to focus on that was exciting for me and had a calming effect.

Oh, and as far as goals once this is finished, I've been getting into real estate investment and I think there will be a decent price drop in a few months in at least a few parts of the US. I've focused on multi-unit properties in B or C class neighborhoods. I know that not all of my tenants will pay in the coming months since the city is effectively telling them rent is optional for a while (no evictions), but I have reserves so I should be OK. I may get some work done on one of my units since I expect contractors to drop their prices if/when demand for renovations falls off a cliff.

well let's hope you're right. At some point in life, we all have to accept that our knowledge and experience is limited and then we cede control of certain decisions to those in authority...who we hope are taking the right advice from the most informed.

then unless we are truly arrogant, we need to trust their judgements and follow that advice

The extreme measures are mostly due to piss poor preparation and inept leadership. Plus a country mostly made of idiots doesn't help things either.

But at point would it be justified?

I have this feeling we're just going to keep climbing this ladder.

First it was, oh a few cases in China big deal nothing to worry.

Then oh 2 cases in California big deal nothing to worry.

Oh 19 deaths in California big deal nothing to worry.

They thought this about Swine flu and it had 12k deaths nothing to worry.

Oh we're up to over 10k deaths now? ummm.... well auto accidents have more nothing to worry.

So with this strategy you just wait until you reach some number and then it's time to be concerned? Like I don't get that logic.

as a non native speaker fluent in mandarin i can't stress enough you're best case scenario here is getting good enough to be a laughing stock when you speak - can't stress this enough, studying mandarin is just about the worst possible allocation of time for a non native speaker over the age of 10

if unconvinced pm me and i'll send you some links that pour into great detail why this is the case

but for example, all the americans you know that say or claim they speak chinese aren't half as professional as borat and often literally unintelligible

No, we should look at the projected impact and worse case impact to decide what measures to take. It would be foolish to only consider current numbers.

I am extremely anti-authority. I only really object to the measures that indiscriminately suspend personal liberties. I don’t think we should pretend the virus doesn’t exist, I just don’t like stuff like these “shelter in place” orders or forcing businesses to close. On that note I hope they get legally challenged and struck down because I think they’re unconstitutional.

I get that, but for me part of the fun is learning things about the culture through the language. Like the day the teacher explained the terms "egg person" and "banana person."

The projected worse case impact is death in the millions so what should we do instead? Just let everyone do whatever?
