This is why you should be sizing your bets so that he should have had no money left after his flop raise.
Imagine if you did this instead:
Preflop, you raise to 50 instead of 40. If he calls you, the pot is 100ish and you have 200 left to bet.
Now on the flop, let's say you bet 65. If he raises you at this point, he'd probably just go all in. And if he calls you, then the pot would be 230ish with 135 left to bet for the turn, and you can go all in then.
Even with your $40 preflop sizing, the pot is around $80 with 210 left to bet. You can still go 65/145, and your flop sizing means that his raise would have been all in.
Basically your bet sizing allowed your opponent to save some money.
