Re: ***"The Pen:" Official LLSNL Chat Thread***

Have been a pro since roughly 2008 and my last real job was in 2005. It has its upsides, but would not recommend as a career.

I mostly got into it because I had a high IQ and mathematical brain, but was lazy/unmotivated in school, so poker seemed like the perfect "shortcut" to financial independence.

I'm not nearly as well off as I'd like to be, but a lot of that is my fault (laziness and/or mental health issues). It's definitely not smooth sailing and 6 figures every year.

Re: ***"The Pen:" Official LLSNL Chat Thread***

Serious two part question SABR:

1. What would you specifically name as the upsides?
2. Would you say that mental health stuff has led to issues with tilt? Or just with putting in sufficient volume and/or feeling half decent about yourself?

Most of them have to do with freedom. You choose when you want to work, take vacations, and don't answer to anybody.

I'll also say that I've met a lot of awesome people through poker. My closest friends and my ex-gf are all from poker. I like hanging out with poker people because they are super chill. With "normal people" sometimes you can't have lunch with them without people stressing out over who owes who $10. With poker friends there are people I'd trust with 5 figures easily.

No, not tilt.

never understood those people, i mean it kind of sucks when you split a bill evenly and you drank water while they cosmos and ordered apps/deserts but after a while I noticed I only got bothered by that if i didn't actually like the group i was in - started being more discriminate about who i hung out with and stopped bugging me entirely

also think it's a class thing too, went to prep school and a liberal arts school full of trustafarians and it always blew my mind whenever I'd go hang out with friends who went to state schools and if someone was at someone's place hanging out they'd be asked for money if they wanted to smoke with them or have some of the beers in the fridge, also shocked how some college parties would literally have people charging money at the door to get in

these things were standard at some places but you'd get ostracized at my school if someone was hanging out and you told them if they threw you 5 bucks you'd pass them the bong you were already loading for yourself anyway

Never understood why it's so hard for people to split checks based on what they actually purchased. It's like 3rd grade math.

If middle class norms blow your mind then you would definitely be in shock if you ever went to a cookout in the barrio.

Re: ***"The Pen:" Official LLSNL Chat Thread***

I think splitting based on what you ordered is standard, but I never do that with my friends.

We roughly take turns asking for the check. Sometimes we forget who paid the previous time, and then usually everyone volunteers.

I had a complete falling out with a poker friend because I split based on what I order and he doesn't lol

it seems to be a thing in the US to split, at least among my poker friends but yeah, here if we go out with friends, somebody calculates the bill plus tip and we just split it...doesn't matter if you drank less wine or only ate a starter

Now I’m a rec player that gambools it up and holds my own playing mid stakes - lower end of high (unsure where the start is tbh). I work a bajillion hours so my poker habit waxes and wanes as time allows. The quarantine has actually allowed me to play more than I have in years since there are games available every day / night.

My roll was built grinding it up / not funded by work, but having a job affords me the ability to play with less fear and enjoy the game more.

Sorry to disappoint. As someone that has lived on both sides, being a pro poker player < having a steady gig + playing poker on the side.

There are certainly a few regs in this thread that are very successful and have done quite well for themselves as pros. With that being said, I’d be surprised if any of them would recommend it as a career.
This is great. As much as I want to tell you you’re wrong and don’t know what you’re talking about, you clearly do... so thanks for sharing this.

Very weird timing considering my recent spew but I had the best day of my poker career today.

FT a huge tourney today.

+$3k overall despite some cash game spew.

Life is great. I love you all.

I was told splitting the bill is something coworkers do, not friends. Not sure, I haven't been out to eat with friends much.

Congrats RtP.

I can't seem to beat $5/5 anymore. Crushing $25/50 though, so it's a fair trade-off.

Re: ***"The Pen:" Official LLSNL Chat Thread***

Thanks! Ik it’s not that much money in loldegen land but that’s two months of near full time work for my roommate... (well at least atm before lolAirforce )

My strat after 4 figure days has been to celebrate with food etc. but stick to the same stakes for cash and tourneys. It’s tempting to play bigger, especially wrt tournaments, but that approach seems like a poor decision and a recipe for disaster long term.

Speaking of food with friends, I told my roommate he could order w/e he wanted off the Whataburger menu on me tonight and he was stoked about that. Life EV ftw

I assume he’ll spend most of his time wishing he’d joined the Marines ?

Yeah, in Florida. He’s starting in September.

Something to do with contracting. Let me ask him again if I remember lol..

He did ROTC for 4 years if you know what that is.

Re: ***"The Pen:" Official LLSNL Chat Thread***

Yes, I'm intimately familiar with ROTC. I work with the local detachment quite a bit. I'm sorry he has to wait for a billet, but now's not the best time to start Active Duty anyway.

Contracting is a good job for folks who plan to do one term, as it really sets one up for business work thereafter. You don't see a ton of 20-year contracting officers, though.
