So after three rounds of collecting samples, we finally decided on the exact shade of off-white to paint the dining room and the front hall, "Mineral Ash," and with me finally done with comprehensive exams, it's project time.

I go to Lowe's yesterday with the sample card, and the exact paint base to put it on. Paint base has changed names, so I have to google at the store to find the new branding, and they only have two gallons of it left. No problem, I only need two gallons. Give the base and the sample card to the lady to get it mixed while I do some more shopping. Come back about ten minutes later and she hands me two gallons of mixed paint, correct brand, with an off white bit painted on the lid. Off I go.

Today I move all the furniture out of the dining room, tape off the trim, lay the drop cloths and paint two coats. Wife is very happy about how much better it looks. I go tape and paint the hallway, get the first coat on before I have to break in to gallon number two. As I pick it up, I notice that the paint is mixed on a pastel base, not a neutral one.

How is that possible, as I checked the item numbers on both gallons, due to the name change? Then I go look at the empty gallon. It's on a pastel base too. Then I read the details of the order on the sticker they put on the can, two gallons of "Dream Cream" on Valspar 4000 eggshell finish, pastel base. I got someone else's paint. They now have two gallons of "Mineral Ash" on Valspar 400 eggshell finish, neutral base.

Fortunately, it looks fine, and Dream Cream was one of the finalists anyway, so my wife is fine with it. I hope the other guy either notices earlier in the process than I did, or has a similarly chill spouse.
