Oh well, language evolves as it does, and all of our efforts to point to root meanings are like Canute attempting to control the tides by royal decree.

Linguistics 101 had an old dictionary example; Doctor: a man of great learning.
J.D. the official meaning is Juris Doctor. Calling myself 'Dr' without a stethoscope would be dumb. But as dumb as using 'Esquire' without a sword?

Re: ***"The Pen:" Official LLSNL Chat Thread***
I’m going to be in northfield Minnesota for a little as well. Michigan because girl I’m dating and legal weed and newly legalized poker
There’s a 5% chance my car breaks down- which route should I take in that case? And I assume it’s better to travel during the day when worried about car issues.
It’s like 4 hours more but much safer and potentially less expensive if I go through tucson then Oklahoma City then up to Minnesota

no- best to drink heavily and drive only at night if u have auto concerns. Whatever you do make sure you dont have AAA coverage and be absolutely certain that you do not go to a repair shop prior to your trip

Re: ***"The Pen:" Official LLSNL Chat Thread***
Re: car breaking down. If you're in Wyo or SD, you might be screwed. Some of those places that look like towns (i.e., a dot on the map) are really just a collection of a few houses, no repairs available.
Once you get east of the Missouri, you're probably never more than 10 or miles from a town. It's just out west that there are sometimes pretty big empty spaces.
I guess I'd say stick to the interstates. Somewhat more likely someone will happen along.
Um, also, if you're driving from SF to Ironwood, Tucson and OKC are not "like 4 hours more", even in a Bugatti Veyron.
Then again, I'd point out that legal weed and poker are available in Colorado, and its way nicer and closer than the UP.

I’m gonna go the southern route. I drove Colorado Springs to San Francisco through Wyoming and it was kinda scary, very empty.
It’s a 9 hour difference to hit tucson and okc. Okc isn’t a free nights stay so it’s not a requirement

Re: ***"The Pen:" Official LLSNL Chat Thread***
The wife and I drove back to NYC from CO via Wyoming, SD, Minnesota, upper peninsula, Mackinac Island, and down thru Michigan.
Get a check up for your car, keep your gas topped up, and don't stop if you drive thru any reservation. Wounded Knee wasn't that long ago, mind you. But overall you'll be fine.
Times have changed but legalization wasn't what it is today and some of those states don't fkc around. They're not Kansas but some have stupid laws, so be careful.

No Indians in Waxahachie. Former NFL QB Jon Kitna resigned as head football coach at Waxahachie HS after a 20-13 record. Proceed with caution.

Why would you go that far south if your goal is the upper midwest?
If you casino hop you will have something to do while your car gets fixed.

Re: ***"The Pen:" Official LLSNL Chat Thread***
Google maps says the difference between adding those destinations and not is +13 hours. I'm surprised it's that little to go many hundreds of miles out of the way.
Only you can decide if that extra time is worth it.
Assuming you're planning to go relatively soon, as mentioned earlier, tornado season starting in the southern plains. Still can be winter weather up north, but not too common in April. Be careful, watch the forecast.

Re: ***"The Pen:" Official LLSNL Chat Thread***
Fun fact: Rip tides kill more people than tornadoes. I mean, those people probably aren't driving at the time, but still tornadoes are not the pervasive threat that the news makes them out to be. I lived in tornado alley for three years, and only saw one tornado, about 15 miles away and headed in the other direction.
