I have a prefabricated 10'×12' cedar gazebo with steel roof that I need help assembling and am looking to hire. How much should I be paying?

Local contractor quoted me ~$1k for 8hrs and 2 workers. That seems stupid expensive.

Don - I would think if you look for ads for general laborers looking for work you should b able to find a couple o dudes that would take 20$/hr cash in fist.

$1000/8 hours/2 people = $62.50/hr/person

That’s actually not bad when you realize the workers probably make $30+/hr on the books. The difference is taxes the owner has to pay, operating expenses and profit (which I would expect to be modest in this case)

Go to HD/Lowe’s early in the morning and look for dudes just hanging out in front of the store

Is it realistic to expect to pay almost a 50% markup?

yes, I think it’s all realistic. I believe owners pay something like 20-25% above pay for taxes. They’re going to have some factor of markup on their employees for pay for all overhead. And then there is a factor for profit.

Couple this with the economy we’re currently in. I was talking to a landscaper about getting work done and many guys on his crew were not coming back because of federal unemployment. And that’s across the industry. So the guys that did come back are basically playing the companies against each other to drive their wages up.

There is also the possibility that it’s the “I don’t want to ****ing deal with this” price, but honestly, I would have expected it to be higher if that was the case, but YMMV

Another suggestion would be to look up local handy men companies. I’m not sure what kind of company gave you the price, but if it wasn’t a handy man company, they might be cheaper just because they tend to have smaller business models.

I'm not against paying people their worth. If that's the cost for help then that's the cost and I'll pay it. I guess I was just surprised and also disappointed in myself for working in fkcing kitches instead of assembling gazebos for *******s like me lol

Father's Day should be banned. This is more true than ever now the federal government has finally acknowledged Juneteenth as a national holiday. Next year Juneteenth and Father's Day will be on the exact same day and that is in no way acceptable.

Trades people have made good money for a decently long time. Trades people with some business savvy can really clean up. Had I realized it when I was younger I might have skipped college and the mid 6 figure student loan debt that accompanied it

If you pay for my expenses, I’ll come put it together with $0 labor

Ha. With the exception of Homer, so far I'm batting pretty well with meeting thread members. I'll consider it, we can punt some $$$ at blackhawk and play some golf. I offered similar to a buddy of mine but he deferred his "turtle frequent flyer miles" until ski season.

My guess is that the relatively high cost is to even out the time spent making $0/hour while waiting around praying someone who needs a gazebo built shows up.
