In his lifetime? Is he old? Otherwise seems unproductive.

For high stakes money too.

He’s 31. So yes.

People don’t realize how insanely hard becoming a chess GM is. He could dedicate his entire life to it and it effectively wouldn’t matter at that age.

Hence the long odds and why he backed out.

this ain’t lol high stakes live poker

He’s pretty good for a regular guy. Think he’s 2000 or so on chess.com which is prob like what? 1800 live? If that? Long way to go

I'm not saying he would get there... I'm saying escrowing $ for 60 years seems ridiculous.

Also out on trying to collect from a dead guy.

In those bets it’s common for the small money to post

Also realistically it’s not lifetime. It’s like 15-20 years. He’s not going from IM to GM at 68

That’s actually the main problem. At the titled level overseas (2300+) you only play 1 game a day.

Because games are 3-6 hours+, potentially involve heavy preparation, and draining.

chess.com ratings otoh are for short time controls so mostly irrelevant

no so for the bet, he was putting up $400k up front and then if/when he gets there he collects $4,400,000.

so it’s basically a $400k loan you can invest.

time value of money considerations

*31 isn’t old of course. It’s old for this. if anyone understands brain capacity/speed etc. itt they can explain why. It’s hard for me to articulate.

So how would he be assured payment if this was actually something doable?

well dan smith is a fairly upstanding guy

*who’s net worth probably exceeds $4,400,000.

I think GM is a really noble pursuit honestly. Even more so because there’s usually no money in it.

that way it’s almost always well deserved and there are no shortcuts.

I would be interested to hear if someone could think of a more true test of hard work, dedication, intelligence, etc.?

that’s what I tell kids at least idk

This is different than the Smart Contract miasma under Ethereum and all the other coins. Some are outright scams. Some are not decentralized at all like Ripple.
and this makes sense to you

That and computers are why real tournament chess is not popular. Imagine waiting 10 minutes for someone to check.

The bet odds are actually short of what it would cost to bribe enough GMs to throw games to you. I guess there's the Russian mafia.

When you get older, your reaction time, as well as your capacity for learning tend to decrease.

He probably purposefully low-balled his chess rating and is actually already a world class chess player. This was probably the best way he knew to monetize all that hard work and dedication he put in as a child playing chess. Amarillo Slim would be proud of Timex right now.

If you choose to trust any poker player in the world for over 10 years that he will pay up on a million dollar plus bet then you are so naive that you don't deserve to ever get paid.

Dearest Rob,

If you have Sirius please dial into Howard Stern.

Ronnie had a custom home built in Vegas and they are razzing him. Please set them all straight.

took me about the same amount of time. we have a family account on amazon music though. i'm not sure there is much difference between them other than cost. wife told me amazon is cheaper than spotify, so we went with that.

Had my first bad session in a while.

I effectively jammed pre-flop for $8K with AKo into a guy who had called $1K already with 74s. He called off another $7K and flopped trips right away.

He was nice enough (and degen enough) to offer me the same deal again (AKo vs 74s pre with him taking 74s). So we pick the cards out of a deck and run it for $5K each. Flop comes KT3r, then 4... then 7... are you kidding me?

We ran it a third time for another $5K, and finally I won one.

Later on he gave the same deal to another player, and I side-bet another $2K on the guy with AKo, 74s flopped a flush to make AKo dead right on the flop.

Cliffs: got all-in with AKo vs 74s 4 times for a total of $20K. Lost 3 out of 4. I can't even be mad, you have to respect a guy who's willing to put in so much money behind just to gamble.

As a gambler? Obviously not, but he's winning at life more than I am for sure. He's basically paying for my R8 and gives zero ****s about it.
