You’re too sophisticated for me, Garick. English please

Good call on business work, we met in the business school actually.

I know he wants to go to grad school as well, and says the Air Force will pay. That’s pretty cool.

Also, he got up this past year on most days around when I went to sleep (5 am).. so. that program sounds pretty demanding

Spoiler:
That being said, it’s 8 am here and I’m not sleeping anytime soon

this is pretty representative of how things work with me. always split w/ work (unless we can bill to a job). pretty much always evenly divide bill with friends and then people who know they had more will then typically try to throw extra $ in.

pro tip for splitting the bill - let your server know at the beginning of the meal. they will then enter it into the computer separately and it takes minimal effort for the server.

Yeah, military education benefits are the stone cold nuts. I've done my BS, MA, and now my PhD on the Air Force dime. For two of those, I've even managed to go to school full-time while still drawing my salary. The other was the more traditional part-time school, full-time regular military job gig.

Not sure what part of my previous post was confusing. Contracting tends to be great for folks who want to do 4-ish years in the Air Force and then get out and make bank as part of the military-industrial complex. It's less common to see people stay in it for an entire military career. There aren't many Generals who are Contracting Officers. I'm not sure if that's because promotion opportunities are limited, because the opportunities to get out and make more money as a civilian are so tempting, or some combination of the two.

Generally, Contracting Officers work a base schedule of 7:30-4:30 M-F, with some long days at the end of each fiscal year, so it's relatively chill as military schedules go.

Something to do with contracting. Let me ask him again if I remember lol..

He did ROTC for 4 years if you know what that is.

This is meant in a supportive way but...saying "if you know what ROTC is" is about like saying "if you know what MLB is." Anyone who's seen Animal House or been to college would be familiar.

Yeah, my brother got his MD from the Air Force.

Back in the day, the party line was to progress beyond O-5 (maybe O-6), one had to be in a combat role, which back then was missiles or piloting. Missile Ops and KC-series planes (refuelers, cargo) were the red headed stepchildren of the officer corps.

If it’s a meal- I always split evenly unless one person is picking up the tab.

On a guys weekend or bachelor party, we typically just take turns picking up the tab.

For a drink tab, I always take turns buying rounds.

I generally tend to pick up more than my share of tabs and don’t mind amongst close friends or family.

On top of that he's saying that to someone who's in the military lol.

Not surprising considering the source though.

Reminds me of the old joke about asking the different services to secure a building:

When you tell the Army to secure a building, they post guards at all the entrances and check the ID of everyone entering or leaving.

When you tell the Marines to secure a building, they lay down a covering barrage of mortar fire, storm the building with a rifle platoon, and kill everyone inside.

When you tell the Navy to secure a building, they turn off the lights, lock the doors, and go home.

When you tell the Air Force to secure a building they take out a six-month lease with option to buy.

It's a Contracting Officer's job to take care of that, BTW.

Im in U.S. and only people ive every seen worry about dividing along what they ordered were some youngs, mostly female years ago. As adults all are chill, and no one worries that someone ordered more expensive drink/entrees.

If I encountered that now I may accomodate, but probably wouldnt look to go out with them in future.

When the chAir Force wants to build a new base, they make sure to build the golf course first and the runway last... cuz its hard to go back to Congress to ask for more $$$ because you only got the first 9-holes done... but its a piece of cake to ask for more $$$ to finish the runway.

I'll often just pick up the bill and I'll usually try to take care of it away from the table. Otherwise we're chopping it down the middle, ain't nobody got time for that nickel and dime shyt.

I always appreciated the Air Force facilities when we had the chance to use them. You guys always had the nicest sheit. Kadena was the spot.

lol reminds me how my grandfather who hated his time in the war, refused to go to reunions, would never talk about it, etc

despite a lifetime in aviation and being a pilot in wwii, he would always be sure to correct people that it was the army and not the airforce that he was in (airforce didn't exist then iirc)

I had a colleague who was a former Marine. On his way back from a deployment they stopped at an Air Force Base, and the only facilities available were an old enlisted barracks that had been decommisioned but not yet torn down. The Air Force apologized profusely that that all they had to offer were such substandard accommodations. When they got to them, he realized that the Air Force's version of condemned barracks were nicer than the Marines' regular barracks. So he transferred.

Correct. Air Force became an independent service with the National Defense Act of 1947.

lol this is so true. I remember having a similar experience. We were training on a different base for a month and all they had available were Air Force quarters for boots and it was way nicer than anything the officers had on our side.

The amount of money the other services write off as a rounding error is more than our entire budget. We were still using comm equipment that was used in Vietnam lol.
