So first of all let me say this is my first ever post on any poker forum so sorry if I annoy anyone or make myself look like an idiot.
I am getting back into poker after roughly a 7 year hiatus. I used to play low stakes both online and live. But in the past 7 years I have not really played much or studied the game at all. It’s hard to explain my skill level, but when I was in my prime, I was a mildly winning player a low stakes and a big winner live.
My goal is to try to update my game into a more modern approach. I was just hoping someone could point me in the direction of any books, forums, or free videos that do a good job of really explaining concepts which are now considered fundamentals. For example; one thing I’ve heard a lot since I started playing again is that — if you’re faced with a bet on the river and you’re unsure of whether or not you should call — I keep hearing “you’re supposed to call with the top of your range”.
Now, when I was playing I never really heard playing saying that.
Another new concept is the lbasing your decisions on card removal. Again, this was not really talked about when I played.

I know this is extremely vague but I’m just looking to find out more information on those kinds of things.
If anybody get recommended some books, forums, videos, etc... I would appreciate it so much. I would get a subscription to a training site, but right now i cant afford it.
(Also, I have read Jandas No limit Hold’em for advanced players and didn’t really feel like I learned enough. I’m looking to check out “Play optimal poker” by Andrew Brokos, Janda’s book “Applications....”, and “Modern Poker Theory” by Michael Acevedo.
Again, I appreciate it very much.
Thanks
Chris

I can't really point you towards anything specific other then the stickies for this forum. Two things to watch for is that live vs online poker have diverged a lot. And the most profitable live play often varies widely from optimal poker theory.

Most of what you are talking about though is actually straight forward. The run of the mill regular fish has read or hear some about poker theory over the years and can repeat a bit. Often applying it incorrectly, but they have heard a little theory now.

QuadJ nails it, as usual. Personally, I think Janda's books are overkill for LLSNL. While the theory applies, the vast majority of LLSNL will read them as cook books, rather than adjusting them for the level of play where they are. They will make horrendous mistakes in the process.

Firstly, thank you guys for responding.
Ya, so I should’ve clarified my intent as far as goals.
So, I’m going to start playing low stakes lives games to get the rust off, but then I intend on playing higher stakes. I want to study the advanced stuff so that I can move up as quick as possible. Hopefully that makes sense.
I guess now that I’m thinking about it, I probably shouldve posted this on the higher stakes pages, right lol?

Live 1/2 is same as it always been, TAG. Open sizes range from $10 to $20 depending on table dynamics. Fold weak hands to raises, no one raises at 1/2 as a bluff. Flop sets and start blasting away at the pot. 1/2 is full to the brim with loose passive players, don't bluff calling stations. Bluff pussies. Stay out of pots with good players. Pot control.

Boom.

Same as it was ever was, huh? Good to know.
The one thing I’m a little unsure of is EP ranges—in particular suited aces. I used to throw away A2s UTG, but now I’ve heard that solvers really like suited aces.
Any thoughts?
Btw—thanks for your reply

Throw them away UTG at low stakes. The advantages of having them UTG (range disguise, blocker value, bluff equity) go way down against calling stations. You dont need to have a balanced raising range at 1/2. It can be pure value, or bluff heavy if you are picking on weak players (something you will want to do more in late position).

Thanks, ya I figured suited baby aces are a fold UTG. Are there any posts that go into optimal EP ranges for small stakes live games?
Thanks for the info.

I suggest getting a membership to CLP or Upswing. I was in your shoes in that I was a online SNG pro 2009-2011, stopped played for 8 years, and just returned 4 months ago to grind live cash. Ranges in every position is critically important for live cash or else you're going to get yourself into alot of dicey spots, the charts these sites provide is invaluable.

Plus one. Can highly recommend Crush Live Poker as a good way to get some of these concepts hammered in to your brain.

Anyone ever try Run It Once?
I was looking into getting a subscription but the subscription options confused me. It seemed like between the $25/m and the $99/m — the $25 one didn’t allow you to view videos made by Galfond or Sulsky (and obviously I’d want to hear their thought process over anyone else’s).
And with Upswing, I heard that it was a little more on the beginner side.
