Quad Eights? Quad Eights?

1/2 spread limit to 100 (in Colorado max bet is $100)
Hero(me) ($150)
Villian 1 ($80)
Villian 2 ($250)

Hero in late position limps in with pocket eights.
Eight players going to the flop.
Flop is J82 (two spades and one club)

Villian 1 bets 5 dollars.
Villian 2 calls.
Hero third to act raises to $25. (I was thinking of getting the flush draws out)

Villian 1 calls.
Villian 2 calls.

Turn: K of clubs
Villian 1: bets out 20
Villian 2: calls the 20
Hero(me) raises to 120. Villian 1 pushes rest of stack in. I have him covered.
Villian 2 folds.

River: 8

Villian flips over pocket jacks.

I felt like I could of never put him on pocket jacks due to no raise pre-flop.
I thought I was ahead the whole hand but really I sucked out.
The place I was playing at gave $50 for any quads hit so that was nice also.

What do you guys think of the way this hand played out?

lol, not standard for him. This is just a completely standard hand from your perspective. It's a cooler and you sucked out. You are never folding, and you should be very happy to get it all-in on the turn with the second nuts on a draw heavy board. No sense overthinking it. I can almost guarantee that there are 10 more interesting hands from the same session from a strategy perspective than this one.

Only thing is don't raise to get flush draws out, raise to charge them.

I also probably wouldn't over limp with 88. I am raising here to $20 to steal all the dead money.

JJ should of raised himself but whatever. Had he of raised pre you can just call.

actually, raise to get value from an entire range that includes flush draws as well as worse hands

the most +ev sizing may be one that allows correct odds to draw

I mean yeah, raise and make it the correct size in order to properly maximise EV and sometimes that might mean we accept draws are being priced in, except maybe we need to call the effective nuts occasionally in order to balance our range or whatever...this is the kind of commentary that we can nit up all day long.

But specifically with regard to flush draws, in this situation, our thinking should not be to 'get them out'.

I think JJ is probably the nut worst hand to limp.

just a point of clarification, when you have a set, you raise hoping draws call, not hoping to get them out. you're letting your opponent make a mistake by making a massively -EV call.

Don't really like the limp preflop in late positions with eights. Other then that I play the hand the same way and am happily getting stacks in on the turn. With all the limps there should be no reason to believe any villain has JJ or KK so this is as standard as it gets when flopping a set.

Agreed about being happy to get all in or turn.

You said you don't really like the limp pre with pocket eights? What would your optimal play be here? Fold eights pre or raise?
