Important Villain Info:
  • Has 3bet with good frequency. Not a live nit who always has KK+, but not spewing either.
  • Isolated a fish preflop and double barreled AI with J4o for total air.
  • Has raise/folded the turn in a big pot on a 4789cc board.
  • Has checked back 2-3 hands on river which were really easy vbets. (eg: k9 on a x899A board))
  • Has repeatedly called me out for open raising 90%+ of my buttons when folded or limped to. Has 3b me once previously out of around 10 or so opportunities.

$2/5 NL
Effective stack (~$1,100)

Preflop: weak player in MP limps, I raise to $20 OTB with QTss, SB 3b to $60. I call.

Flop ($130) JT4r x/x
Turn ($130) JT4 J two tone. Villain checks, I bet $55, villain x/r to $150. I call.
River ($430) JT4 J 6 no flush. Villain bets $150, I call.

Thoughts:

Spoiler:

Villain's x/r on the turn makes little sense to me. I can't see him checking an overpair OTF then x/r it when it becomes a bluff-catcher to JJJ.

I also don't think he has much if any Jx in his range considering basically every street so far.

History has shown he (1) is capable of post-flop moves and (2) he has passed on opportunities to value bet thinly.

TT, JJ are only one combo each. I think it's possible he is turning AK/AQ/flush draw into a semi-bluff some of the time? River seems like a standard call down given price (only need to be good ~20% of the time)?

NH, although his river sizing looks so valuey. Could he be betting worse tens?

Looks good, however certainly not ecstatic to make the call. QT<AT/KT; QT>T9 and 99 (turning hand into a bluff). Can't see a JX taking that line.

Hope your kicker played.

Thanks, have been running pretty bad and needed a sanity check to make sure my thought process is sound.

This is just a strange hand. I don't why the V would not lead the flop when he three-bet and then check-raise the turn.

I haven't looked at the spoiler, but I am going to guess he had a really strong hand. It is just weird for him to check twice and then all the sudden come to life. I mean, it is not AK and he is value betting AA,KK etc on the flop.

Putting him on a specific hand here (especially quads), but what does he really doing this with? This is such a strange line to take and I would be concerned.

I am going to look at the spoiler now.

Yea, I agree with the thoughts in your spoiler tag.

I would say with 90 percent certainty this is JJ/TT unless he is turning into a total spewtard but how many spewtards check two streets and then come to life after three-betting pre?

I know everyone else is saying this is standard, but I don't know.

Also, what was the purpose of your turn bet? Was it for value or as a bluff?

I don't think we need to bluff here because we have a made hand with showdown value. We are ahead of at least some of his range here.

If it is for value, it is hard to see us getting called by worse. I don't think V is going to call with a hand like 99 that he got out of line with pre-flop.
