Pros and Cons talking poker strategy with opponents away from the table? Pros and Cons talking poker strategy with opponents away from the table?

As the question says, but does the cons outweigh the pros or vice versa talking poker strategy with opponents away from the table. Right now I read poker and watch videos and recently starting to get comfortable posting here but I don't talk poker to anyone. I talk to two of my co-workers about the game and how it's works. They're clueless but they know I play every night and are very curious about my winnings and losses. So I explain the hands and what means what. Their brains start hurting soon enough trying to understand. There's about 30-40 players in my home game players pool in this area. The majority are over 40 or retirees. Few are my age, mid 30s. No-one younger. Some of the older guys are decent and study the game. I can think of one in particular that's a thinking player. Most are just straight up gamblers that just love to play.

Would it be beneficial to try to talk strategy to any of these players? The thinking player? I know all the pros played and learned from each other.

I appreciate your all your input. Thanks

Pros: You get to learn how they think.

Cons: They get to learn how you think. They get to learn that thinking exists. The way that they think is less likely to help you than the sources you're already using.

Talking strat is mutually beneficial. So don't do it with everyone.

Wouldn't it be +EV for both of us to improve but -EV when we're heads up? Of course the thinking player and I would need a mutual and trustworthy agreement to train with one another. But we are talking about a poker player here so there's that risk! I can watch and listen to poker, read it, and type out my understandings here but without speaking poker on a consistent basis I'm losing value in fully learning.

So I could get coach maybe an hour a week. Or join a Skype study group with someone.

Either way, i'd have to start learning to become a meticulous note taker at the table so I have solid hand histories to review.

Thanks again

You don't play this home game solely to make a living, correct? If not, then have fun and talk to people about whatever.

You can meet some pretty cool people in settings like this, and you live in the same area, so now they're drinking buddies, etc!

If you're playing once a week for a $50 buyin I wouldn't worry about it.

Correct. Not for a living! But if I become good enough there's potential to make a living! I wouldn't though. I actually love my job! And to depend of poker full time would be just too much stress.
