Poker has gone through several iterations when it comes to sizing adjustments and it seems like there is a current trend toward lower pf sizing. So 2-4 I'll see opens four 4-4.50, rather than in the past where 5-6 seemed pretty standard (and in the old days it wasn't rare to see 8-10).

Granted, mid-stakes online is way different than Live Low Stakes, but these are good players who spend a lot of time thinking about their game, so I'm wondering if something should be taken from this.

I play 5-5 live and raise to 4x + limpers as standard pf raise. But, perhaps I'm behind the times and should be adjusting to smaller pf sizing (which is going to make postflop skills more valuable/important).

Thoughts?
Thank you

I'm not the most qualified to comment since I don't play midstakes online, but I think this is because players want to open wide and a smaller sizing allows them to do this without losing as much to 3bets.

In general there is so much 3betting that a small open does give you more room to actually play postflop as well.

you want to raise high enough to get it either heads up or three ways to the flop. So if this means too many people are calling you 4x, then you might wana go to 5x-6x.

There is not as much 3betting live as there is online (I can speak for most 2/5, 5/5 & 5/10 games but it does vary)

My preflop raising size is so game dependent. There are times where it is appropriate to make it 8-10X just because there are players who will call with worse and insta fold on a missed flop.

It seems to me that, as we loosen up and raise more hands, we should be raising smaller since suited connectors are more common than large PP. And if we are playing a tight range we should be raising bigger for SPR reasons and value. This is certainly true when playing a smart short stack strategy.

Is this generalization generally correct? It's a thought I've had floating in my brain for a little while.

I'm not particularly good, but one thing I do notice is in live poker quite how many people will c/f or fold when bet into on any flop they don't connect with.

Last session I played there were 3 people at my table who would call a ton of raises and then play PROPER fit/fold after the flop, I was initially raising to 4x, then to 5x, then when it was only these jokers in I could get away with raising to 10x the bb and they'd STILL call and c/f the flop if they have nothing.

One dude snap folded AKs to my cbet face up on a 10 7 4r flop (I had KJ), folded 88 face up to me cbet on 4 J 4 board (I had 55) and folded AQs face up on a K47 board to my cbet (I had complete trash, can't recall) all within about 30 minutes.

It's quite amazing how much these people don't adapt, and they then moan about how they never get paid off when they hit.
