Hi guys,

I come from an online background. I am basically unsure given we are opening larger live (usually 3.5xish) how should we change our ranges.

Also given people call wider pre, and more players, how should we construct our ranges.

I think my general range construction is pretty good in terms of opening and 3betting ranges online. However i'm unsure how to adjust live.

Basically we should be playing a lot of hands that have good post flop playability since we're usually playing flops, but unsure how to adjust this strategy pre. Especially with EP limpers etc.

Live 1/2 and live 1/3, for example, any raise under $12 (for 1/2) or $15 (for 1/3) often invites everyone to play a hand with us and draw out on us. At least in my games.

"Don't pay people off" is a good starting point.

"They are not playing back at you" after the flop if you run into material resistance.

Run good.

(The last suggestion works the best. There are no bots in live games.)

Adjusting range helps a little, but like Nozsr is saying, postflop play is the real difference. Flops will be more multiway and 3bet way less than online so the only real changes to range adjustment I'd make would be to be more willing to play hands like SCs and PPs that can make big hands. I'd also reduce/eliminate premium hands in your calling range since people are more willing to call your 3bet with subpar hands you dominate.

These questions are too general and have been discussed exhaustively both on this forum and in existing literature.

Here is a recent post on pre-flop sizing:

Pre/Post Strategy: Aiming for 1-2 opponents, handling 4-5 on missed flops

As for advice on what your opening range should be, this is going to depend on a range of factors including effective stack sizes and how your opponents are playing.

Given how slow live play is, its hardly surprisingly that the number one leak at low stakes live is our opponents getting bored and playing too many hands pre-flop. That does not necessarily mean that we should loosen our range. To the contrary, the easiest way to profit is to play a tight aggressive style.

If stacks are 150bb or less and you want to be profitable you really have little choice but to play a tight style - especially given that standard raise sizes are larger than normal. I guess with 200bb or more, depending on the table, its at least theoretically possible to be profitable playing either a TAG or LAG style.

But as someone becoming accustomed to the live game it would make sense to start out tight and either stay that way or adjust as you get used to low stakes live. Do not underestimate how boring it can be and the amount of discipline required. Its not uncommon to come across only one or two playable hands per hour.

Open premium hands to as much as you can get away with. Open speculative hands to as little as will let you get stacks in. Ranges and sizing should be transparent and exploitable until you really have a reason to do anything different.
