If a guy has 3-6 months' emergency money, he has it. If he doesn't have it, what do you want him to do? Pause time and work some extra shifts? Go to the money store and buy some more money? That guy on the sidewalk who always offers bags of cash and you never take it, tomorrow when you walk by him you do take it?

Ummmm..how do you get money for anything? You work for it and you save for it. It's a pretty basic concept that has eluded $30k millionaires for decades.

I was half joking. I am sensitive to hit and running though. My idea is that if you were ready to leave either way before you won the pot, leave. But on principle, you also want to to give someone a chance to win back their money, especially when you ve only been playing for a short time at the table, which to be fair, you weren't.

I know that when I am on the receiving end of this, it upsets me a lot. Conversely, I always make a point of talking to a guy I won a pot from and explaining to him I am not hit and running and I was about to leave after I ve played a long time.

bolded 1: it's not their money anymore. it belongs to whomever stack it resides in.

bolded 2: i fail to see how explaining anything makes it better. you won his money and you're leaving. whether you played for the previous 10 minutes or previous 10 hours is inconsequential.

leave when you want to leave. you don't have to answer to anyone at the table (unless you're wife is there, you have to answer to her)

I used to share the same opinion but after enough times of being asked "hit and run?" If I leave after winning any size pot, I just don't bother anymore. Unless they hate you, people never what anyone to leave the table with chips. If I feel it will be uncomfortable, I just take a bathroom break and miss my big blind, come back and rack up.

No, it's not their money anymore. And they don't have any right to a chance to win it back.

BUT ... in a fish's mind it might still be. Sticking around for an orbit or two can give them the *perception* that they have a chance of getting it back, which might make them more likely to come back in the future, or to give action in the future. You don't want a big donator to shut down to you because "he's no fun to play with".

If it's a reg that I know I'll see again the next day I might needle them a bit ( "you're never going to get these back John" ) and then leave.

I always give them a chance to win back their money. When I leave, I let them know when I plan to return. I live 20 miles from the poker room, so I go home for dinner, feed the dogs, slap the wife around & then return for the night session.
Anywho, I play 25-30 hrs a week, primarily at the local room, so they know where to find me.

I've picked up stuck $200, wished everyone luck, told them I was going to take my wife out to dinner despite being stuck & would be back in the evening to try & win it back. Cash games are, after all, a lifetime tournament.

Now, if I were to hit the BBJ & my share was over 10k, they'd never have the chance to win any of that. The casino can "Forget about it!" I never play in the pits.

I don't consider my bankroll "my money." Thinking of poker as a lifetime tournament has does wonders to help me with my poker. It has given me the freedom to play poker more freely without thinking of losing money and concentrate on playing +Ev poker.

As my bankroll gets fat, I trim it off for Xmas, vacation, etc. & that money is now my money.

If I were ever to trim it off too much & run into a deep downswing & have to replenish my bankroll, I'd be doing it with my money.

it's semantics really => whether you consider it your money when you spend it on yourself or when it is in stack at the casino. i consider it mine until i lose it. case in point, i can leave the table any time i want and spend that money on anything i want, ie it's mine while in my stack because i can leave with it.

maybe it's just the way my brain is wired, but have zero problem functioning at a table with this mentality

Hitting and running isn't about whether or not you have the right to leave. It's about whether you want to be professional and keep the fish happy or look like you are doing something that is generally considered poor etiquette.

I didn't ask "Is there an excuse for living paycheck to paycheck?"

I asked how that person can save 6 months expenses. You claimed they can. Just say how.

There is little excuse for such an inflexible perspective.

You could go cheaper on the food (unless you are getting all that with food stamps in which case it is a non-factor). You could also sell that fancy schmancy vehicle of yours. Let us not forget that you still have enough time for another job you lazy bum!
