Yep. There was a show in one of the educational channels a few weeks ago (PBS, Discovery, etc), don't remember the show/channel... Anyway they talked with a group that was doing a study in Canada about how lack of sleep effects mental performance.

The sum of their findings is that about 22 hours without sleep the average person is impaired at the same level as someone legally drunk. The longer the subject was deprived sleep the worse it got until about the 35-40 hour mark the subject started to hallucinate and have a very hard time distinguishing between reality and fantasy.

What they found was the root cause is that the brain will revert to a sleeping/dreaming state for very short periods of time, typically lasting for less than 10 seconds. The more sleep deprived the more frequent the micro sleep instances happened. Kind of like a walking dream to them.

As someone that has pulled many 40+ days in his life I can not argue against their findings at all. But I will say that grabbing short naps (15-30 minutes) will make a world of difference. The trick is making sure you wake up after the 15-30 minutes...

After a two day poker sesssion @Foxwoods I pulled over and went to sleep in a RI rest area. I dreamt that I was in Star Wars flying through the Death star. I woke up in two hours and immediately started driving trying to get to the Main Reactor. It wasn't until I was in Providence 30 min later that I realized my car was not actually an X-wing and I was actually insanely driving home.

^ you get similar experiences with magic mushrooms and you don't have to deprive yourself of sleep

you should see at 3 and 5 days. it gets pretty insane to say the least. i remember playing tiger woods 04 on day 4 and there being an entire story to the game like an rpg. like full of carnival games and weird story lines. still broke par.

percula - my brother-in-law just got a promotion at his IT job (might have people under him or connections as hes been there ~4 years) in tempe if you want me to check it out for you. not sure where but i can find out since its a little bit down the road. youve been very helpful and if i can return the favor id like to.

stupid hand--
3/5 at Hustler. Dbag wearing sunglasses opens button for $15. I defend BB with A5ss
Flop 7d-5c-3c. I ask how much he has left and he shows me about $80.
I donk $25, he fiddles around then eventually minraises to $50. I call.
Turn is 9d. I check/call the last $32 or so.
River another 9, no flush. He rolls KdTd. mhig.

So I went about 48 hours total. The last session sucked balls. I played decent (as decent as I could) but was sooooooooo card dead and lost a BI about 4 hands in KK<QQ...meh

Longest I stayed up was 4.5 days. I remember I would drive to places and when I got there I couldn't remember driving there. Not safe at all...

Was that last comment in your post directed at me? Was kind of confused on that one.

Thanks.

I am not 100% ready to hit the job market hard just yet. I have been in the business for >10 years, and this last job has just ruined me, and I need to get my act together before I go to another tech interview. Give me some time to get my Cisco certs re-certified and we can talk.

So I was playing a live donkament this weekend and I saw the most spectacular thing I've ever seen in a tournament ever. this was a $350 buy-in tourney, which for a podunk indian casino is kind of a big deal.

I sit down only to find that my table draw run bad has continued, and I am placed with three of the LUCKIEST, run-hot SOB local donks...I mean, these are the guys who are ALWAYS sucking out with KJo vs. my AK, etc. *facepalm*

This is a great structure, 30k starting chips, 45 min levels.

FIRST hand (blinds are 25/50):

Lucky donk #1 is in the small blind. CO is a guy I've never seen before, seems like a kind of nervous middle aged guy. folds around to CO, who limps. folds to LD1 in the SB, who raises to 150, BB calls, CO calls.

flop is AQ3r. checks to CO, who bets 350. SB calls, BB folds. heads up to the turn.

Turn is T SB looks excited and bets 1000. CO raises to 3000. SB calls.

River is a blank. SB bets 1000 again (lol). CO raises to 3k. SB reraises to 6k. CO goes in the tank.

CO says "A STRAIGHT BEATS ME................I'M ALL IN"

SB snap calls with his crappy KJo, doubles up first hand of the tournament. CO had AQ. The rest of the table is literally sitting there with our mouths hanging open, and the ONLY reason I knew it wasn't deliberate chip dumping is that we had never ever seen this guy before in our lives.

even better, now lucky donk 1 has a mountain of chips.

I can't out-luck these guys. I knew it wasn't gonna be a good day when the first hand I play of the tournament is me on the wrong end of a set over set situation against lucky donk #2 who stuck around with his middle pocket pair despite me hammering the flop (lol, i had a set of deuces). I still managed to grind it out to 32nd place, but no money =/

I wish i could have a signature here...i would make it be my new favorite donkey quote: "A straight beats me. I'm all-in!"
08-23-2010 , 12:12 AM
^^^ wait a minute.......... the guy you called "lucky donk" actually won the hand. WTF the middle aged dude who lost with the AQ is the idiot.

lol where do you play that you witness these shenanigans?
08-23-2010 , 12:29 AM
right, the local lucky buffoon won the hand. i didn't say the CO guy wasn't an idiot, though >< The level of buffoonery was astounding, though...from the raise from the SB with KJo all the way to the classic "straight beats me" line.

this was at Pala, in north san diego county. Seriously, the play here is so soft, especially in tournaments, it's baffling to me. And frustrating when they suck out with their J5 sooooted against my Aces, but hey, they keep calling with it, I'm fine with that.

KJo is this guy's "favorite hand"...lol.

A quick question Im going to cross-post in small stakes limit as well regarding a question between game sizes...

Which of these games would be bigger, and by roughly how much...

2/3 NL with a min BI of 50 and a max of 200
5/5 NL with a min of 200 and a max of 500
10/20 NL with a min of 2000 max 5000
2/3 PLO with a min of 200 and a max of 500
5/5 PLO with a 400 min and uncapped BI
5/10 PLO 500 min uncapped max BI
10/20 Limit Hold Em with a small bet of 10, a big bet of 20 and no kills, straddles etc...
5/10 LHE with no straddles and kills

Most importantly though, the 10/20 LHE vs the 2/3 NL

Cheers

Ash

Couple things for you pros around here and i dont want to clog the forum with another thread, especially one not about strat.

1 - im underrolled for any live game. im in school and thats my main career goal, i just want to do this on the side and make some money where i can. i play at a usually extraordinarily fishy game in vegas with .5/1 blinds. do you guys think its a bad idea to play fairly nitty and concentrate on getting good value while gaining experience and building a roll? i know that the hands i consider crummy can win a lot of money live but i just dont want to pay to chase a ton of mediocre draws unless the price is really right. i dont like playing weak-tight but i feel its the best way to build a roll without going busto because i really dont want to put any more money into this thing. I know im more skilled than 95% of the players i play against there but i just dont have the flexibility and im not just there to drop BIs to get free drinks and have a blast. Online im something of a 22/18 and i play 6max almost exclusively. Live i play tight from EP with 22+/AQ+/KQ and in LP ill mix in my suited aces and some SCs. But i pretty much fold if i dont hit and wont call to chase if my expressed/implied odds arent right.

2. it seems that every book is for online play. have any of you read any live play books that were any good? besides Elements of Poker, which i have. it seems there would be a good market for something like this from maybe someone like ed miller.

sorry, tl;dr, i know
