Sabr, what are your thoughts on dropping down in stakes to get your head right? Less stress, better chances of booking wins, etc.

Tried that last week and still lost. Rather put a bullet through my brain.

Take a week or two off.

seroiusly sabr- either humble up or stop posting. Every one wants the best for you. You are clearly a deep level thinker at poker and a very nice guy. But your thinking right now is jacked and we are going around in circles and it is beyond depressing.

I think Ava and DCFC have both made solid suggestions SABR.
A change of scenery would probably be really refreshing, and dropping stakes temporarily doesn’t have to be the surrender that you’re deciding it to be. It might even help you analyze your game from a different perspective, which would be helpful when returning to your normal stakes. Mixing up location/stakes and playing against people who don’t know your tendencies would probably also be a big plus.
What’s your fav MLB team btw?

Oh don't worry we won't be going in circles for very long.

IIRC, you posted about reaching a "milestone" about a year or so ago. If it's the milestone I'm thinking of, I hope to reach the same one by the end of this year at 1/3 NL. At the end of Jan, it looked like I was a lock for this but I've had a pesky little breakeven stretch lately which puts it in more in question.

Also not even a fair comparison because they come from different sources

I didn't remember what you were talking about, so I searched the thread. Time flies, last time I used the word milestone ITT was in 2015. Not sure what I was talking about, as I hadn't played poker in 3 months at that point due to my records, and was neither at peak nor trough. Maybe a post-count?

Oh, just figured it out. I was half-way through my deployment to Qatar.

SABR (and anyone else who isn't feelin right): consider seeing a therapist.

As a former therapist, I can say this: it works (*).

If people complain about their knee hurting for weeks and weeks, we wouldn't tell them to suck it up, drop down in stakes, or even avoid the casino, we'd say: *get an appointment with a doctor*... if your tooth hurts, *go see a dentist*. (by the way - yes, I do appreciate that a poker pro's job might be contributing to stress... but if a surgeon is both depressed and hyper stressed by his job, we wouldn't say, 'try being a nurse for awhile, maybe that will help'... we'd say 'go see a professional for depression'. Also, it is true that some people will have to change jobs/careers to be happy. But try treatment first. A depressed poker player will probably be a depressed banker/insurance salesman/social worker/etc).

Depression is a defined, diagnose-able condition. Treatment helps.

(*) It works (to some degree) nearly 100% of the time if two things are true: the 'client' comes in open-minded and with motivation to change (i.e. not just going through the motions cuz their spouse/others made them come to counseling), and the client and therapist have a decent connection.

Those 2 things, IMO, are vastly more important than the type of therapy employed (**), or the experience/skill level of the therapist. (but some (thankfully low percentage of) therapists are complete loons, unfortunately. If you get one of those, try again )

(**) But some version of CBT (cognitive behavioral) or ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) are endorsed by me.

Peace

1) Where do you sit on the “chemical imbalances” spectrum? I.e. Why do chemical imbalances happen, and when should meds be considered.

2) My limited experiences with therapists found them to be similar to doctors in that only the top 10%ish are truly in the field to actually help people. Many are there for status, degree, pay, etc. Like in medicine, this doesn’t necessarily make them bad at what they do. In fact empathy/skill have less correlation in medicine then one would think. But still, I have found therapists to have a certain smugness about them and lacking in real empathy. Would you disagree, or if not, why do you think it is this way?

3) Why are you a former therapist?

4) Most people are depressed because they are ass holes. What they really need is a friend. But they can't make a friend because they're ass holes. So they hire one, and it makes them feel better. A hooker is half the price and 5x more effective.

5) The DSM V has a diagnosis for 75% of the population. So what what is normal anyway?

Once upon a time 4,000 kids a year were diagnosed with ADD. Then Ritalin was invented and the next year 400,000 kids got it. Who in the world would trust that?

Once upon a time, people who couldn't control their eating habits were called fat slobs. Then they invented a pill that makes food taste like ****. Then, when the DSM got revised to version V, they added a diagnosis for "binge eating". And advertising for the ****-taste-pill were everywhere.

Let's call psychology what it is.....it's a a fringe branch of science that's being weaponized by the progressive left in order to create an unchecked, unelected body of "experts" that gets to decide who can and can't have guns.
This'll be fun

It's not clear to me who is being treated by psychology, and who is being exploited by it.
