About 8 months. The last time it had been that long was before I moved to Vancouver (which took place in 2008).

I've only ever owned a rifle and it now resides with an Uncle in Minnesota. The wife grew up with guns and has wanted a training course and a handgun for a while now, since before we lived in NYC. She's not necessarily a well regulated militia but I get it

Never eat at a place called "Mom's." Never play poker with a man called "Doc." Never date a woman whose militia isn't as well-regulated as yours.

I inherited some rifles from my father and they’re quite old, the action appears good but the bluing is not excellent to my amateur eye. I don’t see any similar corrosion in the bores.

How much should cost me to get these things appraised, or restored?

with that being said, for home protection, a nice pump action shotgun with bird shot is great. any person who willingly hears the distinctive sound of chambering a round in a pump action shotgun and still enters a room literally has a death wish. bird shot allows you to be pretty much blind and still hit something in a confined space. and you probably wont kill them, which is typically good..
Thanks. Based on one day of browsing, it seems that they can be OK as an ultra-conservative investment. High quality guns hold their value really well. Seemingly better than precious metals, e.g. If the dollar goes in the toilet it would be nice to have a few things like that.

However, it is really hard to know what their value is. There are a lot of variables. Make X Model Y sells for very different amounts. I suspect you can do really well at auctions and estate sales and stuff if you are an expert because it is so confusing as a novice.

The bird shot thing is good. I'd actually rather just let someone take my money than kill them. But obviously, once someone breaks in, you don't know it will stop there.

Plus, I've been skeet shooting a few times and it's fun. A little extra EV. It'll never be my thing, but I'd like to go a couple times a year.

Also, maybe my idea for a biathlon where you downhill ski, then shoot snowboarders out of the air will take off.

To estimate appraisal, first figure out the manufacturer, model and caliber, then check GunBroker.com for similar ones currently for sale. If you have a Cabela's close by, take a couple photos and go talk to the Gun Library manager and ask him for a rough guess.

Might be a good idea to learn what your local gun laws are so you can figure out if you face any trouble with possession and/or transportation.

If they are collectable pieces, having them refinished is more likely to hurt value. Gun collectors want to see the original finish if possible.

If they are not collectable, but you want to take them out into wet conditions (e.g. hunting), then it should be easy to find a local gunsmith who has been in business for decades and who can refinish them for a $100-200 or less.

If they are just going to be kept in the safe until you hand them down, then do a few minutes of research on how to store guns so the don't corrode. Forget about spending any $$$ on refinishing for now, if stored properly they'll be fine as is.

I was never allowed to play with Sr Walkings old hunting rifle. It never really occurred to me either as by the time I was in HS he just left it in the coat closet. I have no idea where it is now, or whether a crime was committed when he moved to California.

THIS is why bird shot is not really a good idea. Either 00Buck or nothing. Or maybe a little less than 00...always look to choose a round that will not penetrate the surrounding walls still carrying enough velocity to do damage to loved ones.

((but also .....get some training about how to plan to use any weapon. Under duress even the police react "incorrectly" at times. An armed, unprepared citizen will make more mistakes.))

cliffs: unarmed in way better if you aren't willing to do the hard work to at least get capable in a stressful situation.

Well, that's the other thing. I'm densely packed with neighbors so I ain't about to start spraying bullets all over.

Anybody can sue anybody for anything. I can sue you for sending aliens to abduct me. Won't go too far, though. The only times I've ever heard of it amounting to much were like, the nut who shot some guy in the back as he was running away after breaking into his garage. Sorry Charlie Bronson, that's not self defense. Especially if you have neighbors.

From what I've witnessed, most normal people who kill other people are pretty ****ed up about it.

I don't need that on my conscience.

That thing sink to high heavens from the start. One of the more bizarre stories I can remember.

As a great Welsh/Australian philosopher by way of London recently told me "The internet is undefeated in these stories of crazy"

That one is a vacation property. I taught him how to fly hanggliders and he spends quality time at the ranch...so when u get down here you will b able to hook up with him fosho

Today I am sitting on my porch and taking it all in. A lot of dudes want to break into photography only they do not have a portfolio. Every year this dude who has an agency books at the ranch. He charges dudes 250 to come out and they get to photo models and boost their protfolio. In the past we have had a bunch do nudes which is fun (especially when they want to go flying). So they did the private shoot yesterday. Today is a meet and greet. The models are here. But they have opened it up to wannabe models and wannabee photographers who can come in and get the lay of the land for a much much smaller fee. So we have upwards of a hunnit scantily clad hotties running around and an absolute sht load of dudes that got a hall pass from their mothers basement following em around....
