New player on a short stack with 88, easy question New player on a short stack with 88, easy question

Just sat down.

First hand at the table.
I am buying in on a short stack, $82 at the start of the hand.
I know I'm better off buying in on a bigger stack.

Hero, otb w/ 88. MP1 bets $14, HJ calls.

Hero?

I'm defaulting to fold, but can I just ship? Should I raise to $35 with the intention to call it off?

Most times I would move in here With hj not likely to have you beat. And the bring in came from mp.

The real answer to your question depends on why you bought in for $82 and what you will do if you lose.

Reading through the lines, this is all the money you had on you. If you lose, you're done playing poker for the night. If you're driving yourself, your evening ends early, but you can go home. For many people, that's acceptable. If you're there with friends and they aren't leaving for 5 hours, sitting in a casino or poker room doing nothing is far less acceptable to most.

From an equity point of view, jamming is the right play. The extra FE makes up for the fact you are putting money in bad by calling. However, if losing is going to cause 5 hours of being miserable, then folding is the right answer.

You would be better off studying first rather than experimenting for all your dough. As a beginner play tight but learn first how to win.

My instinct is that this is pretty close given the range I'd assign a $14 MP open. Did you do any maths or are you just guessing too?

If you have $200 I think this is an easy call. With $82 I'd just ship it. Plan B is folding. Calling and raising less than a jam, I really don't like.

Just did it rough based on a 15% raise range and a 3% continuation range. I see very little calling that doesn't have 88 crushed, but Hero is getting a lot of dead money. 80% of the time, you win $30. 20% of the time, you're a 4:1 underdog (0.2 * 96 - 0.8 * 82) *0.2. Combined, it is positive around 20. It goes negative if the villain starts calling a wide range. The lack of IO by shoving makes it less attractive to call.

Fold pre.

You have no chance of dominating anything and if you get called at best you are a coinflip

That is where the difference would come from. I don't think we got folds nearly that much. (although I don't think we are an 80-20 dog to his calling rnge either though!.)

why are some people so intimidated by the fact that some plays really are just that black and white?
