New game been running for about 40 minutes so far everyone has been fairly tight.

Hero $330 MP 77 Open the pot to $8
HJ young aggressive player flats ($220)
SB older guy calls ($280)

Flop ($26) 252dd

SB checks
Hero checks I checked here knowing the player behind is going to bet always when checked to.
villain bets $20
SB calls
Hero I am pretty speculative has to what kind of hands my opponents can have here obviously then can have 88+ or a combination of flush draws with two overs. I decided to call

Turn Tc
sb Checks
Hero Checks
Villain bets $55
SB Folds
Hero Folds

I think my biggest mistake in the hand might be the decision to not continue on the flop...?

i like the check on the flop assuming the young aggro will bet near 100% of the time. once the sb folds on the turn i think it makes for an easy call. i mean what is the young aggro repping here? he can have 88-tt but i assume he'd 3bet JJ+. other than that his range is flush draws, air, and random tx's that caught on the turn. so I'm calling the turn and probably check calling most non-diamond rivers. you should also consider your perceived range here, which is super weak considering you didn't c-bet the flop. he could easily put you on two big cards imo

yea I realized after the hand when I call flop it looks like my hand is mostly Ace high and he can keep applying pressure.

I would rather c-bet the flop because 77 isn't a happy hand for calling down. You will lose to villain catching some random pair too often.

If villain is betting 66-TT (figuring he raises JJ+ preflop) and any two face cards and any diamond draw your around 60% equity. If he has any sense of when to shut it down that equity edge right now doesn't help much on later streets. If villain is overly aggressive and will 2 or 3 barrel air then it will be +EV to call down but overall it's +EV only against the bad LAGs.

It just seems the hand was played a little too tentatively. Especially OTF.

If you are opening 77 MP - this is your dream flop (short of 7xx). I don't think you can play the flop passively. Either a decent raise (20 - 25) or even a c/r representing a big OP.

If you choose to cbet and get both callers... then you are targetting 66 - TT and/or FD. I would tend to barrel any broadway card or low card - barring diamonds.
