Much better to lead the betting yourself. The goal in this situation is to win your opponnents stack, or as much of it as you can.

We are talking about a situation in which YOU have the worst hand. What you are describing is standard play for value hands. Keep doing that, but I suggest playing SPECULATIVE hands as described when table conditions permit.
