Hero (Seat 3, $400 effective) : Local reg, but doesn't have much history with the table. New to the table in the past 2 orbits and has played one hand which I doubled up through seat 1 his first hand at the table 3 hands ago.

Villain (Seat 2, $covers) seems familiar to me, but I can't recall history. He's been very active preflop including a couple 3bets and been getting a lot of folds, but has shown down a couple of strong hands. He's shown the ability to fold post flop as well.

Action folds to Villain in the c/o who opens to $7. This sizing is smaller than his normal opens of $10-$12.

Hero (Seat 3) is on the button with KK and 3b to $22.

Blinds fold and Villain calls.

Flop: AQ8

Villain checks.

Hero C-bets $25.

Villain leans over to look at my stack, leans back, nods to the dealer and says he's all in.

Obviously, I fold.

What kind of range are we putting Villain on here to make this sort of play, and given our relative lack of history, why would Villain expect me to call off with anything short of QQ?

Is this only Ax, 88, and AQ?

Thanks in advance for your insight.

Why c-bet in this WA/WB situation?

His range is probably a bit wider then you suggest with some lower flush draws. His ridiculous over shove is bad if he actually has a monster like AQ or 88. It is also very unlikely he is on total air though because it's a good board for you to have a hand you are never folding. I suspect lots of AsXs where he doesn't actually think his kicker is good if you call but he has good equity anyways and he can fold out some of your AX that are better hands right now.

Your hand is weaker then you represented on the flop so the fold is still trivial. You are mostly somewhere between slightly ahead and crushed.

Did he really just shove $378 into a pot of like $70?

Snapfold, wait for a better spot, and stack him when he spazzes again.

He did. I guess my issue here is that this player seems more than competent, and this like looks bullyish against a range that should look like it nails this board. I'm still trying to figure out how the shove is +ev with any range.

Maybe he is thinking he can induce a call vs his 88/AQ by deliberately making a ridiculous raise? Maybe he has JTss and is happy to gii Vs whatever you have? Maybe he's just a bit weird.

I concur with Garick: don't cbet this flop with KK.

Agree with no Cbet.

Villain taking this line with AQ no spade or AsXs (especially with a little x) could be a possibility. I don't think he does this with air.
AP good fold.

AQ, A8s, and 88 probably make up a large portion of villains range. Maybe KJss, KTss, T9ss, J9ss, JTss too. Potentially AX, but seems like an odd play with that hand.

start by checking the flop. i would take your time after doing so trying to see how your opponent reacts to the check. sometimes he will act more interested, other times he will still be disinterested which is your cue that you have the best hand.

Bet/folding the flop is better with KKx than without the spade. With no spade, checking and evaluating turn seems bets.
