NWI NL 1/2
Hero is not having a good Friday. Connecting with no flops and getting few hands for 3 hours. I got stacked and rebought in for $200. I lost $100 of that and was reluctant to retop. I think my doing this is a form of tilt. It's like I want to get all of the bad luck out. This is irrational but I was trying not to Trooper-off 3 buy-ins today.
UTG raises to $15. He's got about $800 and is luckboxing the afternoon away. He's showing down terrible hands and raising every other hand with dominated/trash hands. We all want to isolate this fellow. He's a 30 WG and looks like he has some motoric challenges.
UTG+1 calls. He's a unimaginative reg who has never read a thing about poker because he doesn't want it to "alter his style." He's a breakeven player. I guess his hands correctly all the time. He's at $250.
MP is a huge gambler. 35 yo BG, he had $500 a few hands earlier and is now down to $200. He calls.
Cutoff is a 75 yo retiree who loves to gamble. He's got about $350. VPIP 50 or so. He hates to raise and hates to be bluffed. He often makes speeches like "I can't fold to you." He's one of the few players who thinks Hero is a wild aggro player. He calls.
The pot is $63 when it gets to me in the BB with JJ
Hero only has $98 or so.
Hero
1. Shoves?
2. Calls?
3. 3bets to
a. $40?
b. $50?
c. $60?

I'm sorry in advance for not topping off. I'm grateful for the advice you give and I occasionally want to "get the bad out" without restacking full when things run horrendously. I know that makes me a wimp.

Shove here 100% of the time. If I lose, then I'm going home and licking my wounds until the next time, but never, ever, calling here and letting the hand play 4-ways. If three villains all call then I either quadruple up or go home. Fine. Happy.

It's a lot easier to shove here rather than flat, have to fold the flop & wait in line at the cashier to get your $83.00. Plus, there's no reason to flat unless you are hoping to flop a set & get action from 2 players.

With this cast of characters i thought shoving would be best because JJ beats their holdings 95% of the time.

If you’re playing scared money with 50 BB’s at 1/2 then just rack up and leave.

As played even Terri Schiavo would know to jam this pre.

So what is our value shove range here? Something like 88+ and AJ+ maybe?

^ yah that’s pretty good and you can maybe squeeze in a little more like ATo and A9s if you’ve got a better than average image. but then again it’s 50 BB’s so probably getting called fairly light.

If you’re properly rolled you shouldn’t be in this spot but if you forgot to top off for some reason than yah widen your shoving range and reload if need be.

Top off top or quit for 3 months. You talk smack about every villain and their lack of knowledge and skill and you have a 100 stack at 1/2. Pathetic. Wait till you can afford a max buyin

I can remember when I had only a $2K bankroll & was trying to build it up, so I could prove to my wife [without touching other money] that I could enough playing poker to quit my part-time, semi-retirement job. So I feel for the guy.

@AvgReg: I think an average winning reg wins $12 - $14 per hour long-term at 1/2NL. Bad choice of screen name for someone berating other posters.

Short stack is a strategy.

I also think jamming is clearly right.

Playing a short stack is fine, IF you're playing the appropriate strategy. Indeed, it's an easier strategy to play, and tends to reduce skill advantage, making it useful for less skilled players.

Don't play a deep-stack strategy with a short stack. A significant number of hands aren't profitable without stacks deep enough to provide substantial implied odds.

If you don't know (or don't want to play) a decent short-stack strategy, either buy in or go home. You're cutting your win rate, possibly all the way past 0.

Lighten up Francis! I don't "talk smack" about villains I describe them. Quite well actually. No, I'll keep playing whenever I want to. Probably Wednesday. $200 is my usual buy in though. I cut it off at three buy-ins max for any session. I haven't lost the max since July. It's been a good year.

I pushed with JJ and the other guys folded except for cutoff.
He said my name and added, "I want to fold but I can't."
He showed AA
I said, "GG"
FLOP 3-5-J
The table gasped.
I said "no ace"
Turn 10, River A
Cutoff wins.
I thought it was an obvious shove too. My friend argued with me and seemed to think the cutoff obviously had aces. I asked why since he did not reraise. I thought it was the correct play but told him i'd post the hand to see what people say.

What? Unless he is a sick gambler that would rather get his money in with 75s just because it's a bigger gamble that makes no sense.

There are situations where that makes sense. I have flatted AA/KK when I knew somebody after me was itching to raise/shove and have seen others do the same thing. If you had looked at your cards ahead of time and gave off some obvious tell then villain's play makes sense. But the previous comment means that isn't true unless villain is also a huge liar.

Yeah, honestly my friend had it all wrong. He told me it was a "limped pot." I concluded he was probably on his phone during the hand.
