JJ in early position, got a little lost... JJ in early position, got a little lost...

hey all, first time trying a discussion of a hand, so give me some flexibility, i promise to do better.. ( not even sure if this is the right thread...)

monthly home tournament, this year i am only coming when i can, others involved in season long standings

blinds are 40/80 hero is UTG, villain is 2 to my left, 8 handed
hero has just reloaded for 1500--only 1 rebuy allowed, villain has just tripled up and has hero covered 4x.

Hero with JJ
I open to 225, villain calls, all others fold

Flop is 3 8 8.

Check check.

Turn is 9x

I bet 300. He tanks for a bit and raises to 800.

My image is tending toward LAG, balanced, most have tougher time reading my hands and ranges. Villain is smart, thinker law prof, fairly solid, not afraid to put his chips in. Knows bluffs are in my range and knows I love to play back at him.

Thoughts on my line?

can you please explain when you checked the flop? I think you still have the best hand here imo so I would call and/or shove...

however you should have bet the flop and bet it hard and if he calls maybe there's someway he found a 8 but now that you got yourself in a corner you will have to probably punt your stack to find out. if you bet flop hard and he calls there might be a way to get away from the hand?

Yeah, must bet on the flop. Not sure what else you'd want w/ JJ.

What are we looking at suit wise? If it was a rainbow flop, then makes more sense that he would've checked flop behind.

Easy flop bet is easy... Your image is perfect to value bet this flop and get called by tons worse. As played, he can easily have air and 9x here. He has some 8x for sure, but if you bet/3bet this turn after checking the flop, you don't rep too much unless he assumes you take this line with overpairs regularly. You got yourself in a sort of silly spot, but just jam now and lol when he snaps with K9o.

Now this is my kind of optimism.

Your image is LAG and you checked this flop?

First thing I thought as well. You have the overpair, its a good flop, you need to come out firing here. I am not sure there is any justification to checking this one.

Now you are automatically forced to be defensive and can stand to lose a lot more than if you had come out firing on the flop.

As everyone said, pretty much never check this flop. Unless you're just trying to mess with someone for the fun of it. You're more often shooting yourself in the foot.

As played, I'd call it down.

yep...checked the flop..like i said...got lost...i think some part of me was thinking i would c r.

sometimes i think toomuch.

okay, so i called the raise, leaving me with 500 behind and i am feeling sad because i am too far in to leave now.

the river is a q off, and i shove my last 500.

this is not a good hand to begin discussing stuff here. i am embarassed now that i review it all.

As played you've got a few options
1) Get out of dodge, he put in a big re-raise, and you may not want to put your whole stack at risk with a overpair
2) Decide to just call it down. You're not believing he has an 8 or 99 or QQ+ and you're committed to calling down and hope he doesn't hit an overcard. And you figure he will continue to put money in the pot with his 9x hands.
3) Shove right here as you just want to realize the equity you have. Though I don't think you are folding out much that beats you, maybe QQ+

Personally I would call it down if you think he can make that re-raise with his 9x hands. But letting it going probably isn't a bad option either.
But once you call, you are pretty much committed to calling it down.

Since you called, when the Q drops, I'd just check and let him continue.

It's good to post hands that you misplayed. That's how you learn; no worries, bones.

I have nothing new to add: on the flop, you are ahead of his range, so bet.

I think it's okay to get it in on a queen. An ace might be different, but a queen, meh, just go for it.

okay--i shoved 500, he called and showed 33.

totally should have bet out on the flop...could have gotten away from this hand.

maybe.

thanks all

yeah just a tough spot all around now that we see what he has.. if you bet flop...he probably calls, so he would have been trapping you the whole time. Kind of hard to get away from it but maybe you could have just called a few bets and lost less instead of your whole stack.

TBH, this thread doesn't belong here. This looks like a tournament and this is a cash game forum. You'll get better answers in the STT or home game forums.

Your M is around 12. I'm not sure it even made sense to rebuy. But yes, you're going broke with an OP here if you're going play. You should be betting the flop all the time.
