Hand Ranges Hand Ranges

I keep reading about putting an opponent on a range of hands. But I have always found this difficult to do. I tend to think in terms of absolutes which I know is the incorrect thing to do. So my question is what is the best way to put an opponent on a range of hands preflop? And on all subsequent streets?

Also what sort of ranges should a player be opening with at a live 1/2 games from different positions. I think one of my biggest leaks is either opening with hands that I should be folding or or not opening with hands that I should be playing. Are the different hands that you should be opening with determined by your skill level (opening wider when you are a better player and smaller when you are a weaker player) or should it be based on position only?

I feel like the best way to begin is to start by removing hands you know they can't have.

I.e. Villain limps in MP. You raise BTN with 66. V calls. Flop comes A K 6. You have the effective nuts cuz you know he would raise with PPs

I tend to think of it like those car commercials where the customer is looking for a car and he starts with a bunch of cars and then continuously refines his search until he finds the single car of his dreams. You start the players with a range depending on their play style at the beginning of each hand and with each action you narrow the field of possible hands. You can then assess a range of hands based on his play from what you have seen in the past or what you expect that kind of player to do. As the hand goes on you can than adjust the range based how he acts and the board texture.

Check out some of the beginners guides. They are helpful.
