Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can direct me to a place where I can practice hand ranging as if I were in a pot. Basically coach sweating, but it doesn't need to be live. I am not ready to drop a ton for a coach yet. Is Cardrunners worth it? I mostly play live NL.

Thanks
Mrphud

Google it. You'll see.

Search 2+2 for limon.

Also, the hands posted in this forum. Read the OP, put V on a range, then go to (or wait for, if they aren't posted yet) the results and see if what he actually showed up with fit your range. Also, check the other posters' ranges and see if they agree with yours, and if not, what factors they mentioned in constructing their ranges.

I hear if you say "Limon" 3 times while looking in a mirror, he miraculously posts in every LLSNL at once!

OP, you might want to check out the "Coaching Advice" forum and see if any of the resources mentioned there interest you.

I realize that you're new enough that you can't PM ATsai, as your PMs aren't enabled yet. Feel free to ask him about CLP in this thread. He can't just "tell you all about it," as that breaks the advertising rules, but he's allowed to answer questions. I don't know if they are still active, but a couple of other regulars in this forum have also been CLP coaches.

Similarly, Live at the Bike is apparently a training site as well as just a show now (just learned that today) Limon from that site is sometimes active in this forum, and could probably answer questions in this thread if you have any, since you can't PM.

Normally I prefer that these types of discussions take place in private messages, so that the admins don't think I'm letting people advertise, but since you don't have PMs yet and them answering questions is kosher, please feel free.

Thanks Garick. The suggestion of posted hand analysis is a good idea. Crushing live poker doesn't sound like a bad suggestion either. I will need to do some research before signing up for anything.

Thanks again.

Easiest way to practice hand ranging is to respond to HH in this subforum.

Are you ranging opponents in hands you don't play in? Are you surprised at what opponents turn over when you are in the hand? The best way to range an opponent is to watch them 'every' hand .. especially live, and bank the information.

Live at the Bike is very good to subscribe or watch on YouTube as well.

Best way to practice is when you are not in a hand though IMO. GL

This.

It will get you thinking better about it with real hands but with lots of time for consideration. Then as you get better you will be able to do it when not in hands at the table and eventually it will become at least part of your real time thinking.

As a side, there is a practice tool for estimating equity built into equilab (free stoving/flopzilla software). It has an equity quizz feature where it will give you sample flops with sample hands and you guess at the equity.

What is HH? Lots of jargon and abbreviations that I am not familiar with.

I do think about what people might have. Sometimes I am right, sometimes I am totally surprised. In general I give people more credit than they deserve.

Make sure you're coming up with different ranges for V based upon whether they are betting or calling. That may assist in lowering the amount of surprise you have.

Yes ranges are my issue. I come up with two or one card that they likely have and not a range. So I will be surprised more often than not. Thinking through ranges will improve my reads considerably. I do watch hands I am not in. In fact I have an easier time thinking about cards they might have when I'm not in the hand. Once they are in the hand betting against me I know what my cards are so I think they must have something strong to bet against me. Sounds completely stupid when I think about it, but there you have it.

Part of the reason for this is I have strict bankroll rules that if I bust my buy-in I am done for the night. The approach has its flaws, but it keeps me from tilting all my chips away. It can also keep me from wrecking a loose table I hit a bad beat on. Probably need to change my mindset or set aside a full BR that I am willing to lose. Very hard to tell the wife that I lost $500 on a hobby (never lost this much BTW), especially when I shake my head at here when she plays slots.

Start following some threads in this forum from the first post. We establish a range preflop based on the action sometimes wide sometimes narrow depending on limp, raise, 3 or 4 bet.

Each subsequent action usually allows us to narrow opponents range by eliminating hands that are inconsistent with the action.

I can't emphasize enough what's already been said...that following the threads in this forum will improve that skill more than anything.
