Typical 1/2 game at sands casino. Weekday so a lot of regs. 2 limpers, then gets folded to hero with A K on the button. Hero($400) makes it $12, small blind folds, Villain($81) young reg, in the big blind 3bets to $30. The 2 limpers fold, Hero flat calls for $14 more. Villain shoves for $51 before the Flop 2 5 9. Hero tanks then folds. I put villain on pairs JJ+. Guys give me your thought.

I just shove pre against a short stack. You want to see all 5 cards w AK.

shove pre is best.
flatting pre to never fold at any point in hand is also ok.

Yes shove pre: Here's the reasoning

AK hits the flop ~35% of the time. So if you play just to hit the flop you're missing 2/3rds of the time and folding. Even if the other guy also missed (he could easily have AK also)

AK all in preflop hits the board ~50% of the time cause you get to see all 5 cards. So if you get allin preflop your odds of winning are so much better, especially against a short stack.

Above %'s assume villain doesn't have an A or K. So don't use this logic against a big stack cause if they're calling you with their big stack the chances are high they have an A or K or both

Shoving pre for 40bb and not thinking twice about it.

We have AK, so V will have less of a chance to have AA or KK, so how often if V going to shove with QQ on an A74 flop? Sometimes they do, many times they just fold and grumble. Get the money in pre while you're a relative coin flip to their smaller pocket pair and dominating their AQ/AJ hands

Shove pre. If not, call pre so that you can shove/call flop.

Because of the backdoor draws we have on the flop, we should be calling here if we give villain a range of 22+, AJs+, AJo+ (and honestly, we see worse ranges for short stacks quite often). We have 41.8% against that range and the bet we face is for just under pot, i.e. we need 30% to call and we've got 42% against a reasonable range for this short stacked villain.

Ofc, I agree with earlier replies that we shouldn't be in this spot since it was a better choice for us to shove pre against that range.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Axel Foley agree with everything u said. Crysseyed agree with your advice to, I was actually thinking of calling since I had outs for a runner runner straight and flush draws. Also hitting Ace or King.

Only option is shove pre. Not folding the flop either

Fold if you put villain on pairs JJ+. But why wouldn't at least AK be in his range? That would be enough to make the flop a call so I think the flop should have been a call. But it would have been better to shove PF.
