*Villain is a fairly loose player with a wide range and seems to just want to double up as soon as possible. He's in his early or mid 20's and rebought once already. Had a pretty decent pot with him prior where I 3bet AKo and he called with QTdd. I hit top pair and bet and he called. The flush comes on the turn and we both checked. He then led out for a value bet on the river and I paid him off and he won the pot.

Given this player type and that there is only one over is this ever a call? Should I not even consider a call regardless of player type?

Let him have it. Even if he has something totally random, it's two overcards which will have like 23% equity against you. When you're behind, you'll be like a 7:1 dog.

If you're gonna call this with any pair less than kings, then call with ones that don't block 98/T9/T8. So I'd only consider calling with QQ/JJ.

Edit: You didn't give your preflop action. I assume you raised to like $20?

Without a pretty strong read that Villain cold opens 16bb light, I’d fold 88 here.

Yeah, I'm probably just folding to the 3bet. We're not deep enough to call here.

Flop is an easy fold. Even when we "catch" him bluffing, we're only marginal favorites.

QhJh has 30% equity vs our hand.

And we're totally crushed when he flips over Kx (which has 86% equity vs our hand).

The problem here is he just simply doesn't have enough bluffs to really want to call much at all -- K smashes his AK part of his range, obviously. So I'd just chalk this up to a spot where villains can exploitatively bomb a hand like AQ if they want to. If you limit yourself to calling with QQ, AK, and the occasional flopped set of 66 or 77 if they're both in your range, you'll still be calling with a fairly significant portion of your range (18 combos of QQ/AK, say half of the 3 combos each of 66 and 77 -- so 21 combos total). If you count 6 combos each of 88-JJ, that's 24 combos you'll fold, and then maybe a bunch of other non-paired hands like AQs... You'll be calling with a third of your combos, so it's not like you're really getting exploited here by V's bluffs. Add in some JJ calls if you want and I'm sure you're calling enough.

If you catch some read that villain's bluffing, then fine, the rare call in your spot with 88 isn't going to be the worst thing in the world, but really it should be very rare/based on a pretty strong read.

Personally, even QQ, I'm folding a lot. I just don't see a good reason to call with that when villain's aren't bluffing like this a ton, and so often I'm a big dog.
