Is this ever a good 3bet?
Hi all,
Trying to work on some aspects of my game and expand my 3 bet range. Obviously we should be 3 betting more IP then OOP but played a live 1/3 game and made a play that I'm not sure is profitable?
V1: brand new player has roughly 200 no reads
V2: Older man plays more aggressive than most older people do but can find a fold has over 400
H: Has roughly 100BB playing TAG and winning most pots pre or on the flop
OTTH: V1 limps for 3, V2 raises on the button to 8, H is in the BB and 3 bets to 27 with A9 off. Is this ever okay? obviously we prefer A9 suited instead.

Unless specific reads this goes into the muck

I can think of two circumstances in which it's ok.
1. V2 way overfolds to 3-bets. If he folds a ton we can 3-bet him with ATC, and A9o is better than ATC because the ace blocks some of his calling range and gives you some equity v JJ-KK.
2. V2 raises and calls very very wide such that we're significantly ahead of his calling range. Want to be significantly ahead to make up for being OOP.
With your reads (or lack thereof) this is not a good 3-bet.

Old man should be betting more than $8 with a premium hand from the button over a limper so I think he's at the bottom of his range. If he calls, he is probably calling with his medium pairs. If he calls, I think we can take it down with a half pot c-bet more than 50% of the time.
If he's raising $8 on the button over a limper in a 1/3 game then your game is awful and I would probably get a table change.

Assuming that the $8 pre is most likely some hand you're ahead of or a fit and fold low-med PP, don't really have a huge problem with it except that you're readless on V1 and you're committing 10% of your stack. You can get into some stupid spots OOP with stack sizes and preflop bet. I'd much much prefer to be suited.

Another thing going for hero is the fact that nobody 3-bets light in these games so old man is putting you on a premium hand here, unless he has seen you squeeze before or you have been very active.
This is a spot where the nitty game you are playing in actually works to your advantage, so it's a spot you need to take to ensure your winrate isn't 1BB an hour. You're risking $27 to win $14, you will get folds more than 50% of the time.
