Re: A clueless noob reaches 1000 hours of live 1/3 NL

TL;DR the strat portions, but found the results and info outside of hand play interesting.

GG one of the posters I'm always sure to read when he comments, so I'm loving this.

Thanks for the hard work of writing all this up and congrats on the rungood.

I infer that you play on the weekends since your average session length is 7+ hours and you're home by 10, this would be difficult to do with a regular job. Good read?

Solid read.. Nice results.. I love reading posts like this with someone elses point of view. It helps me discover small leaks I have in my game. (Straddling) I always did it because I assumed it got me more action.

You are one of my favorite posters for strategy posts on this board and are willing to get into discusisiond without getting defensive

I run good at job selection too, so a nice easy peasy 7:30am - 3:15pm shift for me. The casino is about a 2 minute drive from the office, so if I can get on a table fairly quickly I can usually put in a ~6 hour session on a weekday. But, yes, if the family schedule is right I do try to put in a weekend session where I can get in 10 - 12 hours.

Ya, won it at 2/4 limit (2008 iirc), ironically the night before I was to leave to Las Vegas with my wife (girlfriend at the time) where I wouldn't be playing any poker.

Really thought I was about to get my first 25% share last night when I turned a royal flush on a AAQT board, but my opponent only had A9 (lol, I wasn't even able to get my river shove paid off when the board 4-flushed).

Nice job GG and congrats on the solid results!

Just skimmed key stats, but will read the strat views in detail later. Can we expect to see $2/$5 NL in the next 1k hours?

No. I run good on job selection and make good money; actually feel guilty about the amount of hours I waste away at work on here sometimes (but I do get my work done, just not at the nose-to-the-grindstone pace that I used to before the interwebz).

I think playing this full time to support a family, mortgage, cars, etc., etc. would be a real mindf**k especially going thru the dry spells (and I haven't even really had a dry spell yet, I can't imagine what that would be like). I'm perfectly fine having it as an enjoyable hobby (one of many hobbies I have).

I could only perhaps see me doing it "part time" (a few days a week) when me and my wife retire, but that's like a long way off. Way long off. Too far off. 20 years off? Omg, I have to work for 20 more years? Sigh.

great post i have always wished someone would post comprehensive guidelines to low live limit play. I am only at 200 hours and playing 1/2.

Highly doubt it. The 2/5 game rarely goes here since they changed the 1/2 game to a 1/3 game. My guess is that the 2/5 regs are kinda fine playing the 1/3 since it sometimes ends up playing fairly big? I might start taking shots if I see a good 2/5 game going, but honestly, I know where my money comes from and I enjoy 1/3, so I dunno.

What a great read GG. This post may have inspired me to go back to live play and give the NL a whirl.

* waves at Luke *

Did you like give up playing live or something? One thing I always remember stressing about playing low stakes limit is that the only point of it was for FUN; doing it for much anything else (other than the mental stimulation) was pretty retarded. NL isn't nearly as fun, but it's still poker, and that's fun, and even a sucky player can make enough to pay for a free meal or two.

They do exist. When you said you flopped 3 sets last night I tried to think about the last time that happened to me. Maybe 2009. I have had 2 or 3 stretches of 80 hours of not flopping a set.

I will read all of this when I get some time and maybe pick out some different elements of your game and compare them to mine. Maybe I can find some flaws in my thinking.

Ya, the possible run good part can't be overemphasized. And even based on my arbitrary 200 hour breakdowns it's pretty clear I've had normal running spots and huge run good spots (with no real run bad spots). My recent 17-1 run good has really blown my winrate out of proportion, so I really have no confidence in where it is. As far as absolutes, I'm pretty positive I'm a winner in the game I'm playing; beyond that, meh.

Another thing to consider is that there probably is more than one way to win at this game. Overall I take a rather passive approach, which I think might give me a bit of a nut peddler image, which means I probably do have to deleverage the turn a lot to get paid off (and probably induce a decent amount of bluffs). But if you play a much more aggro game and have that image, methinks your later street game will be much different than mine.

I also don't want to be that guy who's like "Hey, I scored 5 goals in the NHL, here's how you go about being a professional hockey player". I know there's much better winrates with far better levels of confidence on here than mine. But it is what it is, and I think it's a good starting point for the level of player that this forum is for and for the stakes they play (i.e. beginners / low levels).

Haven't read yet, but any opus of this magnitude deserves a read. Congrats on the milestone. I don't always agree with your mindset in strat threads, but I don't doubt that you're a winner and as such have a lot to offer these threads. The sheer volume which you put in in LLSNL forum dwarfs my contributions for sure let alone the contextual advantages. I'll get started on my 1000 hour post now and in 2 years I'll be able to post it.

Re: A clueless noob reaches 1000 hours of live 1/3 NL

Great primer for players playing 1/3NL and below, live.

I'm going to grossly oversimplify your awesome thread like this:

ABC poker w/ very little bluffing will make you money at this level. Plain and simple.

Well done and run well the next 1k hours!

PS. I have a buddy who has put that amount of hands in, online, in just over a day. Not trying to trivialize what you've done, not at all...just that online and live are completely different games. Plus, he and I play 6-max online vs FR live, so that's a huge difference in and of itself

Ya, this is the grotesque thing that I always have in the back of my mind. Admittedly, I'm no doubt playing a far easier version of the game than on-liner's, but it's still a very sobering thought.
